TEN years ago this month Puerto Rican Felix Tito Trinidad stepped up to middleweight having already secured titles at 147lbs and 154lbs to take on American William Joppy for the WBA version of the title in Don Kings Middleweight World Championship Series. Then IBF champion Bernard Hopkins had already defeated WBC champion Keith Holmes a month earlier to set up a unification bout with the winner. While Trinidad had earned a reputation as a fearsome puncher at the lower weights there were question marks as to whether his power could travel up to 160lbs. Having defeated Maurice Blocker, Hector Camacho, Pernell Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas the fearsome Puerto Rican had a more than credible record and his explosive style made him one of the most exciting boxers around.
