We all know that whooping Hopkins gave Trinidad in September of 01 was a nasty beating. He completely ruined Trinidad's confidence like he did so many others. But what if for some reason a freak accident happened and Hopkins ruined his ankles like Haye against Bellew 1. He's just a sitting target, just waiting for Tito to tee away. Trinidad wins the MW tournament and doesn't rematch Oscar or Hopkins. His next fight is against a 33 year old Roy Jones Jr at a proposed weight of 168 which was going to happen down the line anyway as the next super fight. Idk man, I think Trinidad at that stage can take jones out Tarver style, at 33 and making 168 Jones would be like Dawson against Ward or himself post Ruiz.
I’m glad that we never saw the fight. A huge money, PPV fight for Roy, but one where he’d have been in a no-win situation. Tito maxed out at 160 pounds. Roy would have beaten him easily at that stage. We should have seen Roy and Bernard fight. It was there, ready to be made.
Jones would have given Trinidad an even bigger humbling than Hopkins did,but Hopkins would’ve defeated Jones in a 170lb catch weight bout in around 2002-2003
Idk man, we're talking about a 33 year old Roy Jones Jr who would have to boil himself down to 168. Trinidad's confidence was absolutely ruined post Hopkins but this would be a prime and motivated version seeking out to destroy a lesser and weight drained version of Roy Jones. Trinidad was so much more the A side at the time that he could of even demanded 166 but 168 seems fair since they would be both number 1 and 2 p4p.
I think that Roy’s speed would still have been too much for Hopkins in 2002. The fight was there to be made, but Hopkins deliberately priced himself out of it, where he demanded $10m.
Roy made 169 pounds when they fought in 2008. Unless he’d have been compromised, I’m certain that he’d have hammered Tito before he went up to HW. Tito had no business at SMW. He only fought Roy at 170 pounds because he couldn’t get any lower. But in 2002, SMW would have been too much for him.. Although he was past his prime, Roy was still a great fighter against Clinton Woods. He was still very sharp and fast.
