He had the ambition the problem was Don King who at the time was more worried with his heavyweights than with his other fighters it was only after Tito threatened to leave that King started giving him the fights he wanted like the Whitaker and Oscar fights, you can see his ambition when after the Oscar fight he said he would move to 154 to fight Reid and Vargas then move up again to 160 to fight Joppy and Hopkins and that his ultimate goal was to face Roy Jones at a super Middle if Jones agreed to it and then retire, people thought he was crazy talking about fighting Roy after what had recently happened against Oscar,Unfortunately for him Hopkins ruined his plans but it was a very good run Tito had between the Oscar fight and the Hopkins fight.
Yeah good point. It's crazy how long he'd been knocking on the door before he got the big fights. I mean it was 93 weren't it when he took down blocker? The way he ripped through the lmw's and joppy was hugely impressive. Regardless of blame it's a shame the welter unifications didn't come off sooner.
Simon Brown was a great Welterweight. He could really hit. Had great stamina himself and carried his power into the late rounds. Similar to Trinidad. I think Felix Trinidad was a shade quicker with his hands. Definitley bigger maybe a little more dynamic. Trinidad had an underated jab and he could really hurt a guy with it if the man tried to come to him. Vargas found this out. Tough call. Trinidad comes off the canvas to win a clear but tough decision.
I think Brown's chin is kind of overrated. As leaky as his defense was, I don't think his chin was good enough to absorb 12/15 rounds of Tito's firepower. A better matchup would be Brown vs Cotto. The outcome for that fight is more debatable than Tito-Brown.
I think Brown is being a bit underrated here. He would make a great go of a fight with Tito. Tito was a great fighter, but he had obvious flaws that could be exposed. A fighter like Starling easily beats him. Brown is a fighter that could go all night, People say his chin is overrated but he was never kayoed until he was past his prime at a higher weight level. I may be in the minority, but I think he would have a great chance of beating Tito.
Cotto is worse than someone like a prime Mo Blocker or Colin Jones was imo.In fact i think he'd even struggle to beat a Nino LaRocca or Roger Stafford. physically feeble, chinny merely decently skilled Welter that Brown would have picked apart in his earlier boxer-puncher style or walked through once he became a seek and destroy powerpunching fighter.
not the one that gave Honeyghan, Brown and Starling good fights, or really any pre-Norris one to be honest.I reckon he gets outboxed from the outside with the significant gap in range he's giving up and is neither durable or offensively potent enough to stalk the thin man effectively enough to win. Has Cotto ever "killed" anyone that was a good prime world class fighter at 147?
I agree. I wouldnt count him out against too many guys that are there to be hit. He was a serious force. PS Buddy McGirt put on one of the great boxing exhibitions to take Simon`s title.
Agreed. And no, he hasn't. Him winning rounds off Floyd is proof that Floyd isn't all that, not the other way round.
Yet Cotto only has three losses one of which was controversial, and avenged dominately. He has a fine record against many world class fighters and losses to the sports two P4P bests. I believe he would have done better against Pac with a better trainer in his corner. Cotto was too big and too good for any version Blocker, and yes Floyd really is that good of a fighter.
Cotto kills Mo Blocker, these classic enthusiasts are so hilarious. They give Floyd **** for dropping rounds to a future HOF'er in Cotto but don't do the same for one of their heroes such as say Pernell Whitaker when he dropped rounds to the likes of Poli Diaz, Jorge Paez, Wilfredo Rivera. As for this thread subject I know Tito wins but not so sure of kayo win but I say Tito wins by late stoppage of like round 10 or so.
