Who wins in a welterweight clash between Thomas Hearns and Felix Trinidad? Both guys are easily two of the best welterweight punchers of all time.
I overated Felix Trinidad at one time. He was overated by quite a few fans but at this point he may be underated. Especially at Welterweight. He was a big, fast dangerous two handed puncher at 147. He boxed better as a Welter also. With that said I have to still favor Thomas Hearns in this matchup. He was even bigger at least taller than Tito and he had better boxing skills. Hearns fast jab would stop Trinidad from getting inside and his right cross would be there in case he gets past that jab. I would give Hearns the edge probably by stoppage. I would give Trinidad a live punchers here because he could really punch and Tommy didnt have the best durability. Hearns wins as long as he doesn`t fight stupid.
At WW which was Hearns bread and butter and Tommy with a significant size advantage would just be too much for Tito. If DLH can give Tito a straight up Boxing lesson in the first 8 or 9 rounds of there fight. what do you think The Hitman is gonna do to him. And im a huge DLH fan and even in his prime at WW even he wouldnt stand a chance against Tommy!
Would have been a bad idea for Hearns to fight Titos fight! Tommy sticks to that jab and droppin that lighting in a bottle right hand and beating Tito to the punch Tommy could have him outa there pretty quick!:good
Trinidad is a cut-price Hearns and for all the areas he was strong in, Hearns was better so it's hard to see what he can do to offset Tommy here. His advantages against other Welterweight (power, height, tenacity) are all rendered irrelevant against Hearns. Could actually see a scenario where Hearns' sheer presence and aggressive intent early on makes Trinidad a little passive and gun-shy. I know that's hard to imagine...But if Cuevas had never fought Hearns, you'd probably find it hard to imagine that anyone could have intimidated Cuevas and made him passive and gun-shy too. Yet that's what Hearns did. I think Hearns takes Tito out early.
Great fight in the first 4 rounds but I see Hearns taking over from there using superior height, reach, and speed. Tito won't quit but Hearns will stop him at some point in the late rounds.
Height and reach most certainly come under the category of "size". You are making the mistake of thinking weight only = size. It doesn't. Size - the spatial dimensions, proportions, magnitude, or bulk of anything
Tommy wins and probably quite easily but he can't make any mistakes or rush in if he hurts Tito, dat left hook of Felix could result in the ring canvas getting covered with thousands of shards of broken glass, Tommy needs to be careful here.
