A truely great fighter IMO surfaces when he doesn't rely on power or doesn't possess power. Sure, fighters become great when they have power and it works for them, but IMO I prefer fighters who don't rely on it. Take away a fighters power and what does he have as a substitute? Hearns had power, but also boxing ability. Leonard had power, but he also had ring generalship and intelligence combined with his boxing ability. Holmes had average power, yet had to work hard for his victories behind one of the best jabs in history. Whitaker never relied on power whatsoever, he was pretty much as good as you'll see for a pure boxer.
Felix Trinidad is by far (easily) the most underrated fighter ever on ESB. Trinidad imo was maybe the second greatest FIINISHER ever, maybe behind Joe Louis. I hate the bull**** about his chin, the man was never ever hurt until he fought B-Hop, not once, and everytime he received a flash knocdown, you paid and were shown no mercy. I remember Merchant saying something along the lines of 'it never ceases to amaze me how people will continue thinking that they can trade with Felix Trinidad', i dont like Merchant, but he spoke complete sense on that one. People say he had problems with movement, but it took a GREAT mover to beat him, (i think Oscar did) an average or even a very good one would be gotten. Great, great welterweight and a great man of the people aswell. EDIT= And i dont think he ever wasted a punch in his prime either, so accurate with every bit of leather (please dont bring up Oscar or his losses, you get the point!!)
Very underrated fighter here at ESB. Undefeated at WW and JMW, and it took an ATG in Hopkins to defeat him. The loss to Winky Wright, it was said earlier, in that fight, I didnt see any fire in him. Truly very sad to see. Only fighters to beat him were bigger men who were great fighters.
I thought Trinidad was hurt early in his career when he was dropped by Cortes. Luckily for him, it was at the end of the round.
I don't fully agree. It's true that he threw shots correctly, but later on it seemed like he was trying to load up on each shot too often. For instance, against Oba Carr, he was throwing good shots to land, not necessarily loading up on the shots and to do maximum damage, but to build up accumulative damage. In his MW fights against Joppy and Hopkins, it seemed like he was falling in love with his power and trying to load up on each shot.
Trinidad threw 90% of his shots with bad intentions. He was not a point scorer. He was never comfortable going out during any round looking to get the jab going and score without trying to hurt his opponent. He played to his strengths I suppose. I have many Trinidad fights.
Yeah, you're right Robbi. When Winky beat him, they were making a big deal in the ring after it (the media guys), and 1 of them approached him and asked him if he was alright. He showed Winky respect but looked at the interviewer kind of puzzled and 'im fine'. It was like, Trinidad only knows how to beat a guy by hurting and trying to stop them physically, to pole-axe a guy! And he just couldnt understand that this guy had beaten him without even attempting that. What a warrior, left it all in the ring (great terminology that!) everytime he fought.
I agree trinidad is underated, as is oscars boxing lesson he gave tito. Tito is in my top 20 welters of all time, certainly one of the better punchers of all time. few in history could outslug tito at 147lb.
Trinidad would clean the welterweight division out today and knock everyone bar Mayweather out - and that's only because Floyd would run.
Great puncher ,with some deficiencies,.Winky proved he had zero head movement and could be jabbed to death.
