It is not broken - I can wiggle my toes and walk on it. Initially I thought it was broken. I have it in ice water and have taken diclofenec. I notice some blue swelling that suggests slight ligament damage. Tendons seem intact. I am infuriated by this as I knew that the spiral staircase was an accident waiting to happen. I have it raised. Any further precautions I should take?
Stay off of it as much as possible. Find a cane or a crutch to help ease the pressure when you have to move around. Also wrap it in an ace bandage. This too relieves pressure. Don't rely too much on pain killers because there are known incidents when the ankle was actually slightly fractured but the persons were still able to walk and weren't convinced. Don't wait too long to get x-rays if you aren't 100% sure it isn't broken.
wrap the hell out of it and get an x-ray. I've seriously ****ed mine up and been able to manage with it before so you should be ok assuming you didn't break anything. there's a lot of little bits n pieces you can break though so you definitely gotta get it checked out, especially if it's swollen and blue already. check the pulse on your foot and feeling in your toes every couple hours til you get to the hospital, keep it above your heart and alternate between heating and icing. wrap it up if you're walking and try to get a cane.
As with any injury RICE. Rest, ice, compress, elevate. Have a knee injury myself at the moment and am doing this.
Thanks for the responses guys. The diagnosis is more than one partially torn ligament. I did indeed feel a pop and this was likely a sudden and momentary dislocation of the ankle joint. This was some fall and I am thankful that it was not my neck that was damaged. All those years of Judo taught me how to fall correctly! I have a note to get it X-rayed when I see fit and will see to it today. Bone damage is unlikely. Should stop me running for 6 weeks as well as doing weight training standing up. I can still do light upper body work though. So, no big deal.
well, this story probably won't sound very believable but here we go: two years ago in october i was training for my black belt and wore myself out. while sparring i dislocated my ankle and it got blue and extremely swollen much like yours did. i gave it the works and had an x-ray and found i didn't tear anything but nearly tore a lot of things. it felt very loose and stayed swollen for a long time. anywho, my choices were quit training or tough it for 3 weeks and test for my black belt. i chose to tough it and wrapped the **** out of it and self medicated, kept running and sparring. STUPID. don't ignore your body. the second your ankle feels funky be done and wait it out, its not worth it. its not fun having a trick ankle, ive sprained it now more times than i can remember and it ****ing sucks.
Hi KarateKid. The fall was down a spiraled staircase and I have a bruised elbow as well as suffering a blow to the back. My knee and ankle joints are shockingly thick in terms of bone structure, and when I heard the pop I assumed that my ankle had broken. I was greeted by a lovely Asian couple who heard the clatter of an 18 stoner falling down a flight of stairs and they were alarmed at the state of my ankle. As soon as I attempted to get up another pop seemed to set things straight and I am left only with mild ligament damage. As soon as I got back to my 3rd floor apartment I took NSAIDs, submerged the foot in ice for 20 minutes, coddled it in warm blankets and then raised it above my heart. Called NHS 24 and saw one of my own docs today. Considering the severity of the fall itself I seem to be OK. I have booked an X-Ray as a precaution.
You sure nobody pushed you? Because if you got pushed I can fly out and hold him down while you kick his ass! Or arse if it was Ricky Hatton!:yep (Humor is the best medicine!) Glad you're okay!
