In addition to saying Frazier was dumb for wanting to keep fighting in Manila (as many have already mentioned), he said: 1. Frazier was stupid for letting Ali's taunting get him angry ("Was he in kindergarten? A Guy calls you a gorilla, so what?" 2. That the gorilla doll Ali was carrying around looked like Frazier, and he thought it was funny Basically, he comes off as a complete *****.
I don't know enough about the man to comment. He does seem to come across as very arrogant. (Although he does freely admit he owes all his career success to Ali) But surely he deserves some credit for quitting the Ali camp when he saw that Ali should no longer be fighting? He admits to feeling guilty for staying on as long as the Shavers bout, but said after seeing the punishment Ali took there, he could stomach no more. He was walking away from fame and fortune with Ali...while everyone else was clinging on like a limpet to get as much from Ali for as long as he could fight...but Pacheco had the integrity to walk away from what he thought was wrong (ali continuing) Apparently, he sent several letters to people close to Ali (his wife, Herbert Muhammed etc) to say he was seriously concerned about Ali's kidneys and general health and that he would urge him to retire. Whatever else he's got wrong...he got that one thing right, surely?
I think he is wrong here...but no more so than Ali himself (although Ali says he now regrets hurting Joe's feelings.)
I didnt realise people thought so bad of pacheco. My only experience of him, apart from Ali stuff, was old tapes of 'top rank fights of the 70s' which i loved as a teen as i always thought then that the american commentaters were much more animated than the british guys and made the fight more enjoyable for me to watch as a kid. He never struck me as any of the superlatives that hes been described on this thread. I met him once at the weigh-in of Eubank-Close and he was nothing less than a perfect gentleman. I suppose ya just gotta take people how you find them, but the amount of hatred on here really really surprised me altho most guys here would have seen a lot more of him than me. Could any of you elaborate on why hes so unpopular, with a few examples?
This is out of context, just like that scene could clearly be interpreted as. He said it was "He didn't want to put Frazier down but it was dumb to want to keep fighting," he's referring to Frazier having 1 eye closed and the other being half-blind already. He then said something like "With two guys equally matched at the highest form, and one of them is fighting blind. You can't ignore that." That's what he's referring to, it's completely from a medical/doctor point of view. In all honesty, I can understand that frame of mind. Don't understand a lot of the opinions on Pacheco. Never really dislike him, he seems like a pretty decent guy and does a good with the broadcasting. He was the only one to have the sense to say "I don't think this is Tyson we know, this is not the Iron Mike of old," after the Holyfield bouts/incidents. And he was speaking on behalf of Mike physically, not just being estranged and crazy the way he acted.
Honestly, but I think. Who wouldn't it too? We all have egos and if his advice was heading he could've saved a beloved figure from further damage done to him. I would act the same way. You can call that self-righteous I guess.
The Fright Doctor vehemently protested that Chacon should have been stopped on cuts in his rematch with Boza Edwards, only to watch Bobby rally to knock Corny on his keister, and then have to eat his words in admitting he was wrong during the post fight interview with the Schoolboy. (The sheepish way Pacheco choked out this admission was priceless.) For a physician, Pacheco sure didn't handle the sight of blood very well.
Horrible interviewer and commentator and the only reason he was of any relevance at all was because he was Ali's cornerman.
