Then he should have stuck with his "true profession."

He also got confused in the Whitaker-Chavez fight and kept referring to Pernell as "Pee-wee" instead of "Sweat Pea". You could hear an awkward silence from his fellow commentators every time he did it.

And in the first Fenech-Nelson fight he kept pronouncing "Fenech" as "Fenitch".

And he also said some **** about McClellan quitting in the Benn fight as well from memory but to be fair he didn't know how serious it was at that moment.

But as a caller he was about as proficient as Ray Torres is as a translator, though not as funny.

I would have loved seeing Pernell watching the fight later and his facial expression being referred to as PeeWee.

I got some good chuckles out of this thread. I only know Pacheco from his announcing work, and he generally left me pretty annoyed. There were two things that I always think of --
    1) I think it may have been one of the Fenech-Nelson fights, Fenech had a cut and at one point Pacheco explains "his face is falling apart."

    2) There was another fight where a fighter took a low blow (Holyfield-Dokes?) and the "Fight Dr." went on to tell us that the fighter took a shot in what is called the "groin area"....thanks for the insight Ferdie! :)

His medical diagnoses would probably be as horrible as his fight calling ability.

The "groin area" quote...not sure how to embed at this time---

It's at 18:20 through 18:27 of this link. I forgot he goes in to explain how it hurts if the protector slides a little...I thought it just hurt to get grazed there!

Give me a break I was tired when I wrote it.

I could lie and say that "sweat" is the English/Australian spelling for "sweet" sort of like we spell it "tyre" or "colour" and Americans spell it "tire" and "color" but folks on here are too wise to fall for that one.

Apologies to Ferdie though , karma came back and bit me on the backside

Don't doubt that he knows his stuff but in all honesty he's an arrogant condescending *****.

Any poster who puts Freddie Dawson as his avatar gets a lotta latitude from me. :good

Actually, if I recall Whitaker once came into the ring with a robe that read "sweat pea". Obviously whoever ordered the thing wasn't much on spelling!

    Thanks mate.

Freddie Dawson was a legend here in Australia back in the day. He did a couple of extended tours here where he basically cleaned out all the top local lightweights and welterweights in an extremely strong era in Australian boxing, nearly all by KO as well. In virtually any other era he'd be a world champion and as it stands some top judges rank him as one of the best to ever fight on these shores anyway. He's one of my favourites, from one of my favourite era's of boxing and I wish more was spoken of him these days.
