For many, Hasegawa was an outskirt top 10 pound for pounder. I personally didnt see it, i had him more in the late 20's because i was unsure of his level of opposition, however, The question now is, where do you rank Montiel? In most circumstances, dethroning the king of your weight division, in his backyard, via stunning 4th round tko, having moved up in weight, would see you cruise into the top 10. Is this how you guys see it?
That fight left me gutted. If he just would have went down and not stayed on the ropes I think he would have been fine. It really depends on how people rank P4P. Some people like to do it based on skill level, and some do it on accomplishment. I personally base it mostly on accomplishment. Looking at the Ring magazine rankings I'd certainly rank him above Caballero, Williams, Dawson, and Donaire. #6 is where I have him.
I'd have him above Donaire, as their wins over Hasegawa and Darchinyan are quite similar in level, but Montiel has a better overall record i feel. I'd also have him above Caballero, but only just, Caballero has more good wins but no great wins. As for Dawson, he is supreme at light heavy, and has stepped up and beaten all his challenger so far, so i'd have him below Dawson. I also rate Williams highly almost as much due to Martinez' recent accomplishment as Williams own achievements. I'd put Montiel in at 8th-9th.
