You throw him in vs Trinidad because he had been Junior Middleweight Champ for 2 years had easily disposed of Yory Boy Campas who gave Trinidad some trouble,Clearly beat the great Ike Quartey right after Ike beat Oscar around the time Oscar beat Tito,Defeated Winky Wright who we all know what happened when him and Tito fought. Vargas was ready and doing well very well until the lowblow came in to play and changed the momentum of the fight and even then Vargas still had his moments. I dont get how shot Vargas was when 2 years later he was sooo close to beating DLH or even afterwards hes whipping up on Champion or contenders like Javier Castejllo and Ray Joval before giving Shane Mosley hell.

I always liked Vargas, like his big heart in the ring. Plus he was good for the sport. His attitude won me. Respect to Vargas no doubt!!

I never really liked Vargas. But when the going got tough Vargas got tougher and thats why I respected the guys career. He peaked too early and he walked into the jaws of hell in Trinidad as a child but fought like a man with some serious balls.

Good thread with some quality ****in' posts...classy AND hateful posts...but most all of them give respect.

I never rooted for Vargas...in fact, I've said some pretty bad things about him...but he's done now...and right here is where I'll finally pay MY respect to him.

You were a fighter, Vargas. Enjoy your retirement....

I didn't much like Vargas in the past, mainly because of his thugish attitude...

But the man was a warrior and deserved respect. He was never in a boring fight, never ran, and gave it his all in each and every match.

And that's more than I can say for a lot of boxers nowadays, some of whom seem to get paid to run around after having talked big, promised knock outs, but end up holding on to that "0" in their record no matter if they have to get on their bike all night in order to do so, the fans be damned.

Vargas talked the talk, but he also tried to walk the walk in every one of his fights...many times paying dearly for it. But he didn't give a damn. Next time, he came up and did the same all over. You could trust Fernando Vargas. You knew what he was about. If you went to see a Vargas fight, you knew you could count on getting your money's worth.

So, respect for a fighter who meant business every time he stepped on that ring. Win or lose, Vargas has earned every accolade that has come his way.

20 seconds into the Trinidad fight, he could have quit right there and no one would have complained. He stook around for 12 more rounds, he has more heart than just about anyone in boxing of the past decade and a half. :?

As a boxer I have plenty of respect for him. Once he opens his mouth, it goes out the window. No doubt he was very talented at his peak, but his mouth caused me to root against him.

If he would have only been a little humble after his loss to ODLH, he could have become a marketing dream. When he continued his thuggish ways that all went away. Just imagine how much money he left on the table by his lack of endorsements? :patsch He has none... nada. Nobody wants to be associated with that mentality.

    Bull****.
Vargas was only 21. He should have had more tune-up fights. Trinidad was a GREAT champion at that time. Lots of title defenses, Tito fought the best before facing Vargas, and had great power even to make a good and young fighter shot, like he did to Vargas.
Vargas was not ready to fight someone like Tito. His win over Winky was a lucky decision and he didn't come even close to beat DLH, even with roids. What fight were you watching ???
Fernando was never the same after he fought Tito. Yes, he was a shot fighter at the age of 21.
