You're totally right that it depends on how we look at it. I personally think it's a bit selfish to put what Vargas (and many people) see as "honor" for himself and boxing fans over his well being and his family. I would be lying if I did not say I didn't have a world of respect and admiration for the heart and courage Vargas showed in the ring during his career. But to use that and put someone down because they chose not to take the same risks he did is pretty silly from my perspective. Would you really put your pride, honor and boxing fans before the people who are really the closest to you and that no matter what happens in the ring (being almost killed or quitting) will still be the ones that love you the most? I know I wouldn't, but if you do, more power to you my friend and if you don't maybe that's part of why you (and I) find it so impressive and even touching when boxers do. But I just think prioritizing is very important in everybodies lives and I know I wouldn't give my life for people who would call me a quitter whenever I say I've had enough in a fight.

ps Sorry for bringing the thread back now it's just that I was not able to connect during the weekend. :good

i think the post you quoted was good, and also i think you just posted a damn good post m'man.....

There is nothing more in boxing that i love then a warrior and his unvanquishable spirit..... the 'pure warrior'..... but to hold everyone to that standard, and to somehow hold it against them when they dont decide to push it that far, shows a lot about a person.

    good post :good

I think I may have comed off a bit as if I had something against Vargas for his comment in my first post, but the truth is he was one of my favorite fighters when he was active and a very big part of it was because of his aztek warrior mindset and the heart he showed in his fights. I remember hearing some of his quotes like "I would rather die before quitting" or saying he would "rather swallow his own blood before his pride" (they're not exact quotes, it's what I remember) and just wishing how much I wanted to see this man win (except vs Trinidad :yep) and really kind off crushed when he lost. But I also can't help but respect great fighters who acknowledge their limits and put down the gloves. A perfect example of this is Erik Morales, no matter what anyone says of him for the third Pacquiao fight I will always see him as a true warrior. :good

Excuse me, I saw Vargas get his ass handed to him at the Staple Center by Mayorga who had to gain 20 lbs for the fight !!!
Vargas is a classless bum....I spoke to a few chicks he tried to pick up on at a club and they just snubbed him and told him to get lost loser.

Talk about one dimensional fighter....look who is talking !!!

The f****r is a loser... I have to disagree with most ppl here that think he was "great", not even close to that.... and to the loser that says he would've beaten Margacheato.... :yep! your boy never proved anything ... besides ALMOST giving a decent fight to Trinidad... "ALMOST" being the key word!

Manny is not a smart fighter imo, Cotto is not one dimmensional either, how does he beat Mosley/Judan/Quintana/Clottey if he is a one dimmensional fighter?

Quintana gave Paul Wiliams a Boxing lesson regardless what happened in the rematch, Williams beat Margarito.

Ill take a quitter over a cheater any day of the week, ironic that he seems to dislike Cotto for apparently quitting but he talks more positively of a cheat!

Cotto is no one dimensional fighter. I think that term is somewhat familiar for Pac before, a southpaw fighter who only depends on his power left. Miguel Cotto I think is an all fighter, though not a running slicky like a Floyd, but can be an unpredictable fighter in the ring.

A complete fighter can counter, attack, be elusive. So in the truest sense a one dimensional fighter is a fighter that does not vary their strategy as much. Cotto is just not well rounded enough to be a complete fighter....however, if you look at his resume you will notice that he has beaten some quality fighters.
