“Right now, I’m thinking about [Buchanan], but listen, there’s another guy that’s been opening his mouth that’s in MMA — and that’s Nick Diaz. He’s been calling me out saying he wants to fight me. I’m like, ‘Who is this guy? You’re not an elite mixed martial artist. You’re not even in the UFC.’ That’s definitely a fight that interests me. He got my attention.”

in a straight up boxing match vargas beats nick easy nick is great mix martial arts fighter but boxing his punches far to loopy to stay in there with some one as skilled as vargas regardless of how shot some think he is

If he lures Diaz into boxing, fine (Diaz has already boxed professionally so it isn't a stretch). Vargas would probably KO him even as shot as he is, and that would be fun to watch.

DO NOT PULL A TONEY, and go into MMA while old and fat trying to regain your glory. I'm not even really a Feroz fan, and it would make me sad to see him do that.

Nah. He wasn't even a 1-punch KO artist in boxing, at least not towards the end. Mercer has the equalizer punch and caught his man cold (and Sylvia has a bad chin; Diaz has an ATG chin, as much as I loathe him you can't help but be in awe of how he can take punishment).

I just realized my two earlier posts seem to contradict. :yep ("In boxing Vargas would probably KO Diaz even as shot as he is" and "Diaz has an ATG chin" don't quite seem to reconcile...)

Make that Vargas would probably TKO Diaz in boxing. He could wear him down by attrition and force a stoppage (maybe score a knockdown or get Diaz on ***** St./laid up on the ropes). The point being made is that Vargas is not going to land a single blow one-shot KO on Diaz, under any sport's rules. :good

Don't know anything about this dude Diaz, if he steps in the ring even a Vargas at this stage will defeat him. Two different combat sports and we all know Vargas could take a lot of punishment before he goes down. Experience and facing true elite fighters advantage truly goes to Vargas, not even close or comparable to any of this kid Diaz MMA opponents.

The only way Diaz would have an advantage is of course if Vargas steps into MMA. Even there Vargas could surprise him with a shot esp. with those small gloves. I attended the Toney fight, Randy knew even a shot by a fat Toney who is not even known for his power could have been the end. The take down was Coutures only plan and Toney just truly underestimated him.

Well...it is two different sports, but watch a little bit of Diaz before leaping to conclusions. As I said, he's a punk and I'm in no way a fan...but he has stood up to some flush shots from some of the best strikers in MMA (who, granted - don't hit like any boxer, but still...the best ones do come close). He's also improved his boxing in recent years, particularly his defense. So he's got two safety nets to fall back on - good head movement to avoid getting hit in the first place and a VERY good chin in case he does. His last opponent KJ Noons has also boxed professionally as a middleweight and went 11-2 (5) and has been considered by some to have the very best boxing skills in all of MMA...and Diaz outboxed him.

He's also had a few pro boxing matches so it isn't like it would be a completely alien sport to him.

Nick is a much better boxer than old Randy (and Vargas is even more shot and out of shape than Toney).

We have yet to see any elite MMA fighter step in the ring. We have witness some very old and very fat shot boxing fighters step with the elite in MMA. Some have lost for being to cocky like Toney and Ray Mercer eventually learn how to easily defeat an MMA dude. Dana should stop being so controlling and afraid, let his fighters make some real money and learn what true skills are... One thing though he is a marketing and business genious.
