One could only imagine if Vargas had the same drive, determination and discipline after losing to Tito that Canelo had after losing to Floyd.. He definitely could have been a champ at 160..
Depends on who the champ was, Canelo beat GGG who would have destroyed a fighter like Vargas no matter what.
I mean, Canelo wasn't as good as Vargas at 154. Definitely not. People who pick Canelo do so purely on what he did later, and I'm not sure that's a legitimate reason.
Despite the worst possible start for Vargas, it was practically an even fight after eight rounds, which wouldn't have been the case if Tito were far better. He was more experienced, though, as well as being smack dab in his physical prime, yes.
He wasnt green, he had 5 defenses of his title and had already beat some very good fighters. You dont beat guys like Campas, Marquez, Wright, Quartey if youre "far too green".
Tito was on another level, and when Wright beat Tito he was finished, I don`t think Vargas looked good v Wright and he was lucky to get the nod.
I am not sure Canelo stops Vargas. Tito who stopped him at 154 was a monster and I don't think Canelo was quite a monster at 154 pounds.
Tito was very good but he could be outboxed which after the first 2 rounds Vargas was starting to make adjustments and stood right in front of tito and had great success by using his skills to slip and counter punch, Even scoring a knockdown and doing enough to pull ahead after 6 rounds. The deliberate low blows didnt help Vargas either.
Not so sure he lost the drive as so much he lost some resilience to damage. After the Tito fights, he never looked quote the same even vs. Shibata & Rivera, even in those stoppage wins.
