I've honestly only watched one full fight with Vargas, and that's against Ike Quartey. What happened to him? Why was his career over before the age of 30? I know he's well over 200 pounds now. How much weight was he cutting in his prime and how harmful was it to his body? Could he of beaten Trinidad sans those epic low blows? Is he a case of a fighter being ruined by a single nights beating?
I also believe they rushed him along, the Trinidad fight was too soon IMO and it ruined him. While he had already beaten some excellent fighters such as Wright ang Quartey, he wasn't ready for a seasoned fighter who was as big a puncher as Trinidad.
I don't know if it was to soon, as Vargas had already beaten Wright and Quartey (both wins that he deserved), and he was the clear top guy for Trinidad to fight at 154lbs. Maybe he does better if he had about 4,5, or 6 more fights, but I don't see the result changing. Trinidad beat him badly, and while I don't think it "ruined" him, he clearly was a lesser fighter afterwards. Same exact thing with David Reid, except that was really to much to soon.
I don't think Vargas was thrown in with Trinidad too early. Up until that point, Vargas had beaten Quartey even more decisively than DLH did. Granted, Quartey was inactive and first time fighting at 154 pounds but I had Vargas winning that fight 8-3-1. Vargas tried to trade with Trinidad too much IMO. He'd clearly outbox him in a couple rounds and than go back to slugging with him eventually. Too much pride. I'm pretty sure Vargas had a reasonably tough time making weight. In the countdown to DLH-Vargas, a boxing writer [forget his name] mentioned that he had to lose 10 pounds a week before the fight with Wright.
Vargas wasn't very good defensively in there. Once his reflexes started to dull, that shoddy defense gets magnified. Another thing was I never sold on Bloodworth in that corner for Duva at that time. Why Lou parted ways with Benton so many years prior I've never completely understood, but that was when they had that real real good stable of fighters. I think Benton is quite a bit > Bloodworth & maybe that would've made a difference in the guy's career.
Really a combination ... He peaked early ... He played hard ... He was very good but not great .. He was never the same after Tito beat him in an exceptional fight ... Just my guess ...

i believe that vargas was still a great force when he fought oscar. even though he had that rivera fight when he was down twice. that can happen sometimes.
i dont think he was that good to start off with. he couldnt really box all he won by was his aggresion and technique....which is a rare commodity, to see a brawler with precise punches and a good amatuer career. he stood straight up so much it wasnt funny. and that he balooned so much between fights just never woudl of helped. he could of made welterweight easily and possibly lightweight.
Are you ****ing kidding? couldn't really box? only won on aggression? could've made welterweight..easily?! and possinbly lightweight? atsch
