Trinidad destroyed him. In my opinion, he fought Tito too soon even though he made one hell of a fight with 6 knock downs total (5 for Fernando, one for Tito).

The last round was crazy !

I think Vargas was a classic case of poor management, both by him and his people. Even if a guy seems like a young prodigy when he's coming up, it's suicide to throw him in with seasoned pros too soon, before he's had to struggle to win and really learned about the mental side of the game as well as the physical. In the General Asylum the other day, this imbecile called DaveTheGreat was tearing strips off of Oscar De La Hoya because he won his 1st world title by fighting The Ring's #7 ranked WBO superfeatherweight champion Jimmy Bredahl, instead of going for Azumah Nelson (despite the fact Nelson had already signed to face Jesse James Leija at the time, but that's by the by). De La Hoya was 21 years old and 11-0 at the time!

This isn't the case for all fighters, some special talents can manage it- Evander Holyfield fought Dwight Muhammad Qawi very early in his career, but in general, I think boxers should have around 30 fights and world title experience and be in their mid-20s before they try and crash the top 10 p4p guys. Otherwise, in these 'protect the zero' times, the defeat just seems to weigh too heavily on their mentality.

Vargas, at 23 and 20-0, I think could have taken a bit more time and prepared a little better mentally for a huge fight with a guy like Trinidad, who was closing in on the p4p#1 spot and at the height of his powers.

You really thought Vargas won agianst Wright? I had Wright winning 7-5 rounds, close but clear.

There is a belief by some that Main Events was worried about Vargas's outside the ring problems, so they went for the big fights and big money for Nando before he self-destructed.

Likewise, I think David Reid's management was worried about his eye and how vulnerable he looked, so they figured he might as well get a big payday against Tito despite having only 14 pro fights.
