Fewer Rounds… Fewer Divisions… One Belt!?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Superheavyweight, Aug 22, 2008.

  1. 15 Rounds or 12 Rounds
    Classic Divisions or Super Divisions
    4 Belts or One Belt

    (The Solution)

World Boxing Federation (The merging of WBC-WBA-WBO-IBF)

    (9 Divisions)

    Heavyweight
    Cruiserweight
    Light Heavyweight
    Middleweight
    Welterweight
    Lightweight
    Featherweight
    Bantamweight
    Flyweight

Discuss, what are the weaknesses of this idea?

Association of Boxing Commissions. They need to unite under 1 flag.

    15 rounds

    less divisions

the weaknesses are that there's less money to be made for the promoters, fighters, and networks

  3. I’d prefer 12 rounds… a more balanced risk on the fighters.

I was always a big proponent of one belt per division...but ESB has changed my mind recently.

...with all of the Cotto-Williams-Margorito BS, the fans are more nutriders than they are a demanding public.

A fighter's fans in this day an age, make excuses for him, on why a fighter doesn't have to beat the guy who beat hiim...

With the fighter's lacking the desire to be seen as the true champ, and the fans lacking the objectivity to hold them to the utmost standard...we actually need multiple belts. So that when one champion is ducking , we can choose not to follow his reign and watch a champion with a more solid claim to the throne.

Boxing is too corrupt for just one belt.

    I prefer 15 rounds...most won't.

  5. As for less money you could be right… but with the right marketing you could sell out any arena.

Merge your bottom three weight classes into two.
    Go to one sanctioning body.
    Have 15 rounds.

And that , my man, is essentially how things looked about eighty years ago!

In some areas of life , we have progress.

    Clearly not in boxing, though.

well we are much more aware now refs will still be eager to stop fights now. not like before at the 15 round rule, 80's.

a 13 round would make sense so there are less draws.

there was a conspiracy that many promotors wanted a 12 round rule due to the mancini-kim fight.the commisions wanted a 12 round title fight as they thought that was a factor but the promotors were way way way behind them on this.

reason...stamina and the ability to get koed when there isnt enough of it. so heavywieghts could win 8 rounds then clinch for the final rounds.

so guys like don king played the good samaritan card so there stamina riddin fighters a chance at a title. and give them more money due to a fighter in title position.

also the 12 round fights can work well on a 1 hour fight. which is great for tv as hit works well in the tv sections. have a bit of a build up and a 12 roudn fight which is about an hour.

15 rounds...tut tut that doesnt work in are tv schedule!!! no no no lets have 12 round yeah that works well

$$$$. The main Weakness in All of Boxing, and indeed, all of sports. Do you know how many belts there are right now? There are 17 divisions, including the Mini-Strawweight Division, which has no lower limit, the way the heavyweights have no upper limit. One WBA champion, from Thailand weighs only 87 pounds.

There is the WBA. The WBA has 17 divisions in it. Lets take the Heavyweight Division for example. Right now, Ruslan Chagaev has been deemed "Champion in Remission" and has been allowed to hold on to his Heavyweight Championship. Nicolai Valuev, AKA Andre the Giant and the Quiet Man, Johnny Ruiz have been deemed #1 and #2 Contenders for the regular WBA Championship. So they fight. Lets pretend Andre hits Johnny with the big splash and beats his ass. Now we have Andre as the WBA Champion, and Ruslan as the WBA Champion in Remission. So, while Ruslan's vagina heals, lets pretend Andre the Giant gets a crack at Frankenstein. Wlad Klitschko, who holds the WBO, the IBF and the IBO (More on those later)....Now lets pretend that Andre headbutts the **** out of Frankenstein, and gorilla presses him, and then pins him, for the 1-2-3. Now Andre the Russian Giant is the WBA regular Heavyweight Champion, the Unified WBA, IBF, WBO and WBA Champion, so the WBA Deems him Superchampion. Now lets say that Sam Peter beats the **** out of the Bride of Frankenstein, Vitali. Sam Peter vs. Andre the Giant, for the Unified, and RING Magazine has decided to deem the winner, RING Champion. So they fight, and Sam Peter tries to bodyslam Andre, and Bobby Heenan grabs Sams foot, outside the ropes, and Jose Suliaman doesnt catch it, so Sam topples over holding 546 pound Andre on top of him, and gets his ass pinned, while James Toney laughs at ringside. Now Andre is the WBC, WBA Superchampion, WBA Regular Champion, IBF, IBO, WBO, and RING Magazine Champion, but he still isnt undisputed. Ruslan's vagina has healed, so he wants a crack.

So Ruslan gets a rematch with Andre, and being the only man in the sport, strong enough to Bodyslam the Giant, does so, and pins
Andre, 1-2-3, and wins! Now he is the WBA Champion in Remission, Regular and Superchampion, and with the RING and WBC, WBO, IBO, and IBF he is Undisputed. He carries 8 belts around him.

Of course, within an Organization like the WBO, there are many branches of a Heavyweight Championship. There is the NABO Title, as well as the WBO Inernational and Intercontinental and Fedelatin belts.

The WBC has the Fedelatin Regular, and Fedelatin Youth belts as well as NABC, the WBC International and Continental Belts, as well as the Continental Americas Belt. So does the IBF, and the IBO. So within each organization there are in one weight division, there are 7 Titles total, not including interim titles.

Then there are the "Minor" titles, such as the IBA, IBC, WBU, NBC and the IBL. They also have all the International and Continental Titles. So total, and I am probably leaving some stuff out, there are a grand total of.....(Drumroll).....70 Heavyweight Titles floating out there right now.

Part of the reason for so many belts? Ok, lets look at last year's Vargas-Mayorga fight. It was non title.....or was it. It was actually for a WBC Continental Americas I believe. The reason was simple. Mayorga was a former WBC champ. Feroz has an IBF and a WBA (And an IBA I believe) but he never got the "Green Belt" like his hero JC Superstar. So they paid the Sanctioning Fees, (VEP and DKP did actually) and the WBC found a Vacant Belt. The Promotion can now Promote the Fight as a Championship Clash. It sounds cooler when Buffer states it is for the WBC Continental Americas Supermiddleweight Title. And it sounds, and looks cooler in the end when the winner is announced as the NEW Champ, and has the Strap put on him during the interview with Larry.

In my opinion boxing has only one fundamental flaw:

It is the only sport, as far as i am aware, where champions or the best participants in the sport can choose to voluntarily avoid one another whilst still being called "world champion"

Thats like an NBA team winning the eastern conference then not having to face the best from the west

An NFL team winning their division and proclaiming themselves superbowl champs

    ect, ect

As far as i am aware, this is a problem truly unique to boxing.

And whilst there are a lot of other difficulties: inept/corrupt judges, too many sanctioning bodies, shady promoters ect, the afforementioned is the one thing fundamentally wrong with the sport IMO

I say we get rid of divisions entirely and just have one megadivision.

The poll is ******ed but if you guys grew up in the era you would long for 15 rounders and fewer belts.

You saw more fights on TV.

To begin with I like 15 rounds. I wish we would go back to that. I've heard all the talk regarding injuries, and doctors like Margaret Goodman have confirmed that there is no scientific evidence to support the theory that a 15 round duration is more dangerous.

i agree with everything except the part of having only one belt. i like watching two legit champions fight in a unification bout.

at first i thought no about the weight divisions but i like that along with no 'catchweight' fights if that was added.

that would mean that ***** ass Oscar Delahoya would have to fight someone his own damn size for his last match. :good

I agree merge the bottom 3 and place a cap on heavy weight and rid of super heavy...unifying the belts is great because it would make the fighters hungrier and makes each title that much more valuable thus drawing more attention from the fans thus higher ppv revenue! great idea!:thumbsup
