Wondering who is sitting on good footage collections of Australian fights of the 40's-90's, particularly Aboriginal fighters. Copies of fights like Mundine v Monzon, Thompson v Duran and any Dave Sands, Elley Bennett, Lachie Austin, Porky Brooke, Jack Hassen. Who has the best local fight libraries in each state?
Not sure who would have the best collection of old footage specific to Aboriginal fighters, but www.youngvictorboxing.com.au is a very good general boxing resource. I know Victor has some old Sydney Stadium stuff etc that might include some of the Aboriginal guys.
you know what would be great. If someone could put together a series of great fights from the very early days of boxing in Australia. I reckon there would be a heap of old fights out there. you could even just do a series on great Aboriginal boxers and then maybe later all different boxers. I might have a chat with Channel 10 about this DSS thanks for the idea mate if you get your hands on any I might give you a call
If you can sell that one to Channel 10 Ced, I'll come and work for you.:hey When the tide goes up both the little boats and the big boats go up with it.
There's no shortage of boxing DVDs in the shops these days. Most are the likes of Sugar Ray, Duran, Ali etc. But there are Aussie ones out there too. The TV Ringside DVD is a ripper. There's another one, which I've got somewhere, that's absolutely brilliant. Think it's called That's Boxing, and it is a complete history of Australian boxing.
I've got most of the publicly available footage. I'm talking more of the lesser knowns - Darcy Ritchie, Colin Graham, Willie Leslie, Brian Roberts. Every professional fight is shot and held somewhere in each state for legal reasons. Who are the grand gatekeepers?
I've been chasing footage of Cliffy Samardin for ages DSS, I know ch.9 once showed his fight against Danny Bellard on Wide World of Sports, if what you say is true I might start making some phone calls and see what I can find out.
No mate dont work for 10 just that DSS does the Koori radio show and was after footage of Koori boxers I put 2 and 2 together and figured he may be doing something on TV on Koori boxers. was just having a joke. I am involved with the free to air boxing with channel 10 but not working for them
Thats an exciting early lead Leon. The more you dig up the better we can showcase him. I can't wait to get at 9, 10 and 7's archives.
The old stuff Young Victor has is copied off old film. As his site carries a plug for DSS radio I guess you've already explored his stuff. Otherwise drop him an e-mail as see what he's got.
Is that the footage they recently bought off ebay for a few grand? Was good to see it picked up by him and not sold to be locked away in a cupboard somewhere.
I'm really surprised no one has released Mundine vs Monzon or Thompson vs Duran on DVD yet. I'm not sure if there is no decent archival footage of these fights or what, but both these Australian fighters put up one hell of a fight against arguably the greatest champions in their respective weight divisions.
