I'll give it a whirl. Seems like I saw this one on TV and from what I remember it was quite a brawl. I had very little appreciation at the time for Duran's historic significance, but I remember hugely admiring him for being old(relatively) and small and taking on this big, scary-lookin' dude and giving him all he could handle and more.

My question is this: how do you guys score these classic fights? Do you pore over the exchanges in slomo and rewatch and take full advantage of technology? Or do you just watch em' through and score em' like you would on a RBR thread?

Most just watch, score, post your card and discuss! But as much detail as you want to get into. I would be interested in seeing some new perspectives. Looking forward to it

I'm fascinated by the sideshow of Barkley's picking the fight, making it into some sort of oath-fight.

"This mother****er acts like I killed Davey Moore. But this is the one I will kill. Wait."

Then he's sat rocking on the floor in the dressing room before the fight, in some weird, bizarre trance. Barkley made a mistake. If he'd STFU he would have won that fight. But he made it personal. Barkley had it hard coming up, but Duran would have coasted those streets based upon his upbringing. Wrong man to chose for a vendetta.

    Here's my scoring :

    01) 10 - 09 Duran
had Barkley slightly ahead til' the end of the round Duran lands that big right and visibly wobbles Iran

    02) 19 - 19 Barkley
    Landed more punches

    03) 28 - 29 Barkley
Duran is in it, but Barkley landing more

    04) 38 - 38 Duran
Liked Duran in the exchanges thought he did more damage

    05) 47 - 48 Barkley
    Great round for Iran

    06) 57 - 57 Duran all day
Don't know what Al was watching, but looked to me like Roberto landed by far the cleaner and more numerous blows

    07) 66 - 67 Barkley by a whisker
Think he hurt Duran more than Duran hurt him, but could be the other way. Almost called it an even rd

    08) 75 - 77 Big Barkley round
Duran doing damage at the end but not enough and was definitely hurt by Barkley

    09) 85 - 86 Duran landing more now down by 1 point

    10) 95 - 95 Duran pulls even. Barkley's eye closing. Was hurt at least once this round.

    11) 105 - 103 Duran pulls ahead with the KD

    12) 114 - 113 Barkley wins the rd close

    Final 114 - 113 Duran

Great fight and love the good sportsmanship after the scores are announced (which seemed a bit wide to me). Probably could have gone either way. Don't think I'd gripe if they gave it to Barkley as long as it was close on the cards.

Iran was my man back in the day....fellow Bronx boy. Duran had massive cojones getting in there with a much bigger, stronger, crazier guy.

At my age, anyone under 40 looks like a child.

I agree. I didn’t score for Barkley but can certainly see why 1 judge did and wouldn’t complain to any who scored for him.

enjoyed your card and thoughts. Thanks for joining in!

If anyone has a list of fights you would like to rescore as a group PM me a list of 5-10 or so, not promising we will get to all of them but I will do what I can.

I will try and post fights that happened during the current week or at least month we are in. Friday’s fight will be from the first week of March of some year in the past. So whatever fights you send if it happened...

example Toney vs McCallum I was fought 12-13-91 (not saying we are doing that one) I would save it for the 2nd week of December if this makes sense..

thanks to all who are participating. Still got 3 more days to get your scorecards in. I will tabulate them on Friday and post a new thread on Friday as well revisiting a fight from the first week of March of some year.
