It was a great accomplishment, and to be honest his style was perfect to beat Hagler. Moving laterally and Marvin had no answer for that and ducking punches and having faster hands to counter and then move. Marvin had been inactive. One fight in two years and he looked very beatable in 1987. He was a guy who took a great punch and always put the pressure on. but Ray had his number and was faster. I give Ray credit, but to say this guys looks older. I can beat him now.
SRL was certainly hurt in this fight. He even admits to be hurt in this fight a few times. One time, when I revisit this fight to score, I'll tell you which round (round 8 or 9 especially 9) stick out in my mind where SRL was clearly hurt. So I'm not sure where this talk of SRL never being hurt came from. Sure he wasn't on ____ street stumbling all around the ring, but he was unquestionably hurt.
1-SRL 2-SRL 3-SRL 4-SRL 5-SRL, very close, most have it other way but Ray won first 2:30 for me and MH power shots at end didn't make up for it 6-SRL 7-MH 8-MH 9-MH 10-MH 11- MH ,very close , MH lands 3 or 4 consecutive lefts to face of SRL but hard to see Steele in the way 12- MH, very close, MH better shots 114-114 Draw Notes: No doubt for me SRL holding a lot and even hitting while holding, over warned and I would be OK with point deducted or borderline call.. SRL won the fight by his movement A fight as close as this easily can be scored differently after watching it and scoring it over the years
Hey Surf, thanks for posting a card (I'll need to soon), but I'm genuinely surprised you had SRL winning round 5. You even say so, and I'm still scratching my head a bit.
Ya, I have it different .. Looking forward to seeing yours … But I hope we can agree that Marvin BLEW this fight. Coming out righty for 2 rounds big mistake as he needed to be fresh and fast to score his jab .. He slowed down quit a bit later in the fight and I feel he wins it if he wins some early rounds with the SRL way to much holding tactic
I wish everyone would take the time to rewatch the fight. It's interesting how these fights don't always unfold the way we remember.
Likewise! In light of the fact that so many people on this forum argue and debate who won and denigrate one fighter or the other, I would think they would want to put thier card where there mouth is. Here is hoping that some more have the gonads to post thier cards
More than that, I'd really like to see their new cards, not the cards that reflect how they think they remember the fight from the last time they watched it years ago. Better than nothing though.
I've watched this fight quite a few times. In watching it again... 1 - Even 2 - Leonard 3 - Hagler 4 - Leonard 5 - Hagler 6 - Leonard 7 - Hagler 8 - Hagler 9 - Hagler 10 - Hagler 11 - Leonard 12 - Hagler 116 - 113 Hagler
