You are correct it was in New Caledonia on Sept 1 1973, and unanimous decision for Valdes, it was for the NABF title.

He stated that he had lost interest, and was more interested in making movies in Argentina, where he was a big star. But he did not remain so called retired for long, Carlos stopped Tony Mundine in the 7 th round on Oct 5 1974 in Luna Park., to retain his WBA title.

Gotta make the odd mistake when doing it off the top of your head buddy!!! I'd hate to be trying it.

Its probably been 5-10 years since my last watch but I saw it the same as you guys did, on the cards.

Valdes seems to be one of the more underrated MW’s or at least under appreciated and seldom discussed. He had good skill and good power, and would not be an easy night. Briscoe is one of my childhood favs and he was just below great. He was good enough to give anyone a tough nights work but came up just short at the highest level. The way Valdes won this impressed me as a big Briscoe fan. Stopping Bennie is an impressive feat!

    1 Valdes
    2 Briscoe
    3 Briscoe
    4 Valdes
    5 Valdes
    6 Valdes
    Valdes 58-56 at TOS

2 Bad men going at it!

And Valdez was the only man who did it in Briscoe's 20 year career.
