Not sure if this is against the rules (or even a good idea) but there seemed to be a lot of demand for Danny Lopez, and I thought it might be cool to rewatch two of his fights.

Cool deal...I prefer ones where our scorecards will factor in more, but these are 2 good scraps.

I will probably look at Chacon vs Lopez tonight and tomorrow and then focus on the Ayala fight for the rest of the week.

Same here but I thought we could try to diversify a bit, given the interest in Lopez. For fights like these, it might be useful if people pick out some of their favorite sequences and exchanges (sharing the time in the film or the round would be especially appreciated). Or if they share any other thoughts about the action and what it reveals about the boxers stylistically and talent-wise.

Wow! Just got done the first 5 rounds, and this fight is just as exciting as I remembered it. But then again I am not sure they knew how to have a boring fight.

I might need to shut off the volume because I am tired of the Chacon huggery. Even my wife has picked up on it and wants to know if the announcer is related to Bobby.

I have it 3-2 for Bobby at this stage, not sure if I will score the next 3 or just sit back and enjoy.

There is a good ebb and flow where both guys have back and forth portions in each round regardless who it is scored for.

Chacon seems slightly more composed perhaps because it is not his first step up to a big fight. Danny seems to force the action a little more, but Bobby is not reluctant in anyway to meet it head on. Bobby seems to be timing Reds jab really well and landing several of his own. Bobby’s right continues to find a home frequently landing several solid ones.

No feeling out round in this one, fast and furious right out of the gate, with round 4 (2close behind it) being the most exciting...but man I love these guys

Ahhhh....what a fight. I had Chacon up 5-3 on the cards at the time of stoppage.

It seemed like Reds eye was bothering him especially in the 8th. Bobby had been consistently finding a home with his right, but now I’m rounds 7-9 his left seems to land every time he throws it, whether the jab, or the left to the body? Not sure if Red was fatigued or trouble seeing or both, but Bobby is taking it to him hard. But Red still has his moments and scored some solid shots of his own.

    Great fight....

@JohnThomas1 you did a great job reffing this fight. Sometimes I didn’t even see the ref in the action and forgot he was there. Also did a good job checking the eye between rounds, and stopped it at just the right tone.

I think Bobby May have landed a few low blows but nothing that seemed to change or impact the fight.

Good job...I need to see if John Thomas reffed any other fights (I’m sure he did, but nothing that my mind recalls). He did a solid job

There was a ref? I was so focussed on watching Chacón and Lopez beating on each other that I barely noticed the third man! So, yeah, he must have done a good job!

I had Chacon - Lopez 4-4 at the time of the stoppage. I gave Lopez rounds 1,2,6,7, and Chacon 3,4,5,8. Lopez kept his left hand low and when he jabbed he brought his left hand back too slow. Chacon figured out that he couldn't miss Lopez with a right hand and he threw more as the fight progressed. Lopez seemed slow for a small fighter, but he was methodical and seldom took a backward step. He applied good pressure, but he couldn't stop the right hand from Chacon.

I had Lopez comfortably ahead of Ayala in their fight. I had it 136-128 with 2 two point rounds for Lopez. To me Ayala mostly fought the wrong fight for a shorter fighter by backing up and then staying in the corner. He would flurry occasionally, but I thought Lopez was controlling the fight with his aggression. In the rounds where Ayala was the aggressor I thought he did better. I scored rounds 2,8,9,13 for Ayala, the rest I scored for Lopez. IMO, Ayala's best round was probably round 8 after being knocked down the previous round.

The fight might have looked totally different from ringside, but to me it looked like a short man was backing up against a much taller opponent and allowing the tall guy to use his height and reach to control the fight. Ayala did have the edge in quickness when he used it, but he spent too much time backing up or laying in the corner.

I'll be interested to read what others thought of these two fights.

Always wondered why Danny and Bobby weren't rematched. Seemed like a natural to me.

    I gave Lopez 2,4,6 and Chacon 1,3,5,7,8

But the first 4 rounds despite the announcers were very closely contested. I agree that Lopez brought the jab back slow and it stood out to me as well. Bobby seemed to time it perfectly and countered it very well...and as you said his right was there all night.

John Thomas was a regular referee in the LA area for many years, into the 90s I think. He also fought in that area, going 57-8. He retired after being stopped by Enrique Bolanos in 1947.

True - surely a try for Bobby at Lopez's title sometime between '76 and '79 could have happened?
