And the best thing about those Great days was there was only one World Champion,no Mickey Mouse stuff like we have today.!!!!! Mahunga.
Precisely mate, and it's understandably hard for today's fight fans to comprehend something like Ali v Frazier in 1971, when the world virtually ground to a halt for a boxing match. I think the story goes that the war was actually temporarily halted while the 'Fight of the Century' took place.
Yep The Thriller In Manilla should be in every True Fight Fans Video cabinet, truly was a War in itself.!!! Could You imagine if still today there was only 1 Division for all World Titles, there would be a hell of a lot of so Called World Champions still waiting for a shot, some of them just Good TV Ringside Fighters and they would hardly be a blimp on the Radar of the World Rankings.!!!! Mahunga
The other thing in days gone by was that there were far more fighters competing in each division, and many of them for their next meal. So the upshot was many more fighters, far and away fewer belts, and as a result very few cheap titles to be had.
Oh yea ? Go even further and cut the sport to the original 8 divisions to stop this mental stuff where massive 170lbs plus fighters dip down to 154 to what now is know as Jr Middle ) to capture pathetic meaningless so called" World titles" .
People with no sense of history fail to understand just how great the Heavyweight division was in the 60s and 70s. So many great fighters never won a title, that would romp it, in and around today's era.
It's part of the reason why it's so hard now to compare fighters from different eras. Years ago if you won more than the one world title you were considered a legend. These days you're a bum if you haven't.
