Styles that Meshed Well: Israel Vazquez vs Rafael Marquez Two similar styles don't always mesh well, like two counter punchers...usually a tactical match & usually called boring. But two inside fighters usually provide fireworks. Izzy & Rafi meshed well for 3 fights. Great Contrast of Styles: James Toney vs Vasilly Jirov Jirov undefeated, forward fighting nonstop incessant punching. James Toney inside counter puncher who doesn't run. Two different fighters whose contrast of styles was a pleasure to watch. for all 12 rounds!
Two styles that don't mesh well: 2 counter punchers in Jones Jr vs Hopkins I & II The record says Jones was hurt going into first fight, but I'm not sure a healthy Jones would've done much different. In terms of tactics. He would've been sharper, but would he really have thrown more? the fight was overall boring. 2nd fight was kinda pitiful to watch. You hit me. No, you try and hit me. I'm old, give it a few rounds. I'm old and washed up..I just showed up for...not sure...
Question fight fans: How did you describe the style of Mosley and DeLahoya when they first met? I'm reaching here...I wouldn't say counter punchers, maybe boxer-punchers? 1st fight IMO was an example of 2 young dogs at the top of their game. Skills were on full display. Sweet Science mixed in with a sense of urgency to out-hustle and out-gut the other..at times turning into a fight. Both able to counter & both able to initiate. Gr8 example of ebb in flow (first fight) Not sure to say that 1st fight qualifies as : 2 styles that meshed well OR... a Great contrast of styles
Willie Pep vs Sandy Saddler. Feather fisted ATG defensive fighter vs huge ATG aggressive fighter with dynamite in his hands. Zamora vs Zarate, two mad bulls seeing who can gore the other one first, a little man's Hagler/Hearns. Marciano vs Charles grace and skill vs a sloppy bruiser.
Honestly Mayweather Maidana 1 surprised me how good of a fight it was.. I expected Floyd to bore it out like he did in the rematch but it turned out to be a pretty good scrap.. Recently surprisingly was Lara vs Hurd and Trout vs Hurd..Hurd get these counter punchers to engage more than usual with his cutoff skills and relentless pressure like a pre plaster margarito..
Great fight that went under the radar. Adamak vs Briggs. Their styles were made for each other. This content is protected
Tarver vs Johnson proved to be a lot more exciting than what was expected; a tactical bout. Both fights were surprisingly entertaining as Glen's constant pressure was responded to by Tarver having to throw combinations more frequently than he'd ever done. Forward agressive fighter vs counter puncher who can let his hands go proved a great contrast of styles This content is protected
Taylor vs Wright. Inititally it seemed like a bad contrast of styles Taylor then known for his jab vs Wirght known for his high guard defense and a jab. jabber vs jabber? Seemed this would be a tactical match with few power punches, but the two engaged. 2 fighters whose offense was about the jab proved to mesh well. Really an entertaining fight. Spinks vs Latimore Young up n comer against a light hitting counter puncher. Cautious fighter vs cautious fighter is how I initially viewed it. But something was apparent by the 2nd round: Spinks seemed shot. Timing was off, reflexes shot to hell, movement was virtually non-existent. This allowed the young dog to take a lot of chances. Unfortunately for him, a clearly shot Cory wasn't going to back down, so a fight broke out. Cory scrapped like a dog to get the win. What seemed to be a a bad contrast of styles between two cautious fighters turned out to be an entertaining scrap. The young guy threw caution to the wind because he saw an old man in front of him. And the old-fighting Spinks threw caution to the wind because he had no speed, no reflexes so he fought & won on heart. This content is protected
