Joe Calzaghe practicaly begged for a shot at roy Jones LHW title but Roy wouldn't talk to him. Why not? It could have been a superfight, a money fight. An undefeated SMW champion challenging the undisputed LHW champ. Its a shame for boxing fans it never happen.
Didnt Sloppy Joe admit to NOT wanting to face Roy around the time Roy was in his prime??? And fought him only because he knew he was shot to peices??? Ya, that sounds like something he would do...Joe was actually smart for not fighting a prime Jones cuz that precious "0" of his wouldnt be on his record, and would of been humiliated by Roy :deal
No he didn't, actually. Jones Jr said that around the time the fight was in the offing, Joe was an unbeaten, highly aggressive southpaw who was totally unnknown in the states and therefore not worth the risk.
There's so many fights missing on RJJ's resumé. But frankly I never considered this to be one of them. When thinking of Calzaghe, the most glaring omission is Sven Ottke.
Joe was nowhere near being a unified SM champ let alone undisputed, when RJJ was at his peak. Jones had no need nor interest in fighting a title holder.
Ottke was a joke. Come on. Don't believe all you read. Calzaghe would have fought Ottke anywhere anytime, he's not this ducker the Americans make him out to be. Ottke was the true definition of a protected champion.
c'mon dude, reluctant roy wouldn't even fight the real light heavyweight champ in DM, let alone prime joe calzaghe :deal
Calzaghe offered Ottke 2 million quid to fight and was refused outright. I seen an interview years ago, when Ottke was IBF champ, and he didn't even mention Calzaghe's name as a potential opponent. Nevertheless, if Calzaghe really wanted Ottke's name then he could of ditched the WBO, and fought his way to mandatory challenger to the IBF title.
Ulli Wegner even admitted during a feature in Boxing Monthly over here that Ottke didn't want to face Calzaghe. Why? Because he was making fortunes facing decent-ish fighters (not bums btw - let's be clear here) and beating those, and getting favours off the ref and judges when needed. He was quite disappointed that Ottke didn't want it, he felt Ottke could have had a chance. I think Calzaghe would beat Ottke pretty clearly over 12 rounds, probably 7-5 in Germany.
Ottke's name does not belong in the same breath as Calzaghe and to suggest that he was ducking Ottke is nothing short of laughable.
YEah he was protected. But so was Joe. I only mentioned that match-up as I've wasted countless saturday nights watching Ottke fights hoping he'd be KTFO. He always annoyed me lol. Calzaghe would have beaten him and that's what I'd like to see. Besides Ottke was the top dog in the division for a number of years and Joe was no.2. Seems natural that they should have fought. Trouble is they both made lots of cash fighting lesser opposition at home.
Unlike Ottke though, I genuinely believe Joe actively sought out the best opposition. The problem was he was all wrong for most big name fighters. Unknown, aggressive, fast handed southpaw. It's easy to see why he was avoided.
