I'm a Calzaghe fan but there is no way he tried as hard as he could of to get the best possible opponents. He could of fought in America far sooner. Even had it been Sheika/Mitchell/Brewer it would of increased his exposure stateside on top of him making a statement that he's not a protected stay at home fighter.

    Perhaps.

I think a lot of it was to do with pride really. He was the champ, so why should he go to them? Thinking along those sort of lines.

Not necessarily the best thing for his career, but understandable.

But Ottke was champ too!! Of a more prestigious title aswel. Then you had the WBA and WBC changing hands in the meantime aswel. They were all like Calzaghe in that regard. Calzaghe could of hit the bigtime between 2000/2002 but had to wait for Lacy to come to him in 2006 for him to shine. That's 4 years of talent/time wasted.

I havent done an opponent by opponent comparison, but I would think that Ottke's opposition compares favourably to Calzaghe's untill Lacy.

The fight I regret not being made was Lewis Klitschko II.

Of course it was the wisest boxing decision ever made in the history of boxing by Lennox Lewis, but nonetheless, that headbutt induced cut in the eyelid caused the worst ever TKO loss to one of the GOAT.

The rematch at least would've allowed for Vitali to show the world that he was waves above the 37 yo former champ, and had the rematch been made Vitali would have brutalized Lennox for 8 or 9 grueling rounds until Lennox would've known that there was never a day in his life that he could've beat A Klitschko headsup.

Cuz calzaghe never wanted to come and fight in america and jones didn't want to go oversea. Calzaghe should have come and fought jones in las vegas since america is the boxing capital in the world. You want to get famous come fight in america.

When Calzaghe was on the outside looking for big fights back then, he couldn't get them no matter what he did. Hopkins reneged on a deal to fight him in 02, and I doubt the RJJ fight could've ever been made, even if Joe was more popular. RJJ couldn't even manage to make the fight with his main challenger in the LHW division after years of fans calling for it. Also, both Hopkins and Jones could not agree to face each other for a much called for rematch when they were top of the pound for pound lists. Only after Joe was top of the crop above 160 and these guys had nothing to lose did they come crawling to him for a fight.

2002 was when hopkins was on top of the world. So he ask for more money? Big deal he just beat felix trinidad-keith holmes and antwun echols. The dude was the king of middleweight division.

Why then did he run into retirement? And what of his postfight interview where he was nearly in tears for getting his ass handed to him.

Lewis himself does not deny that Vitali, on 10 days notice, is better than any version of him.

Doesn't sound like he begged to me.........

"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had',said Calzaghe 'But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels,I wouldn't want to risk it."
    from www.THISISLONDON.co.uk/SPORT/ARTICLE-5499540-DETAILS/I+AM+THE+BEST,+SAYS+HONEST+JOE+/ARTICLE.DO.

    Or the DAILY MIRROR,June 1,1999:

"I'm not chasing after Roy Jones.Be honest,Roy is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights.I just want big money."
