"Fighter A ran all night!" - 1st off, he probably didn't; 2nd, even if he did, it doesn't mean B won

Should the combatants' disposition be divorced from scoring in boxing?

  1. Yes they should be separate. All scoring ought to be objective and devoid of stylistic preference.

  2. No, they're integrally connected. Punish even tactical retreat & reward even ineffective aggression.

Also, people (like bandeedo) seem to be implying that I prefer a runner to a swarmer or anybody else coming forward. That's BS. My favorite modern-era boxers, as most know, are Mikkel Kessler (a come-forward technician and 1-2 artist who fought at medium-long range by keeping opponents at the end of a stiff jab but rarely took a multitude of uninterrupted backward steps throughout his career) and Cristian Mijares (a master boxer and practitioner of center-of-the-ring defense - both mobile, though hardly ever in full retreat, and stationary, in the rubber-waisted mold of a James Toney - and counter-puncher). Neither is someone that you would call a runner.

I was vocal, in threads on this very forum, on the nights they happened, about how much Dirrell's performance versus Stevens and Ler's versus Arce turned my stomach.

Inferring that I "prefer" running to any more pugilistic style - just because I caution everyone to avoid pitfalls in objectivity when scoring that many fall prey to and reminding everyone to be fair & balanced even when you dislike a competitor's style or disposition - is stupid ad hominem nonsense.

Let me put it in laymen's terms. I usually hate guys that go backward and usually like guys who come forward.

But... if the guy coming forward doesn't land as many punches as the guy going backward, I give the guy going backward the round.

If the guy coming forward is hitting air the whole round and the guy going backward lands two pitty pats, then the guy going backward wins the round.

If the guy coming forward doesn't land any punches in a particular round, and the guy going backward doesn't either.... its 10-10.

If the guy coming forward and the guy going backward land a similar number of shots, its a 10-10 round, or damn close round that can go either way depending on the quality of the punches landed.

If the guy coming forward lands more than the guy going backward, even if the guy going backward avoided a ton of shots, the guy coming forward wins the round.

Oh yeah because that makes perfect sense. There's such a correlation between income and fighting prowess, as we all know. Rich boys with soft manicured hands are the most feared SOB's on the planet.

Assuming that a fighter's punches are more effective just because he's being more defensive is exactly the kind of thinking that leads to terrible scorecards.

You are tenacious, I'll give you that.

A numerical list is inherently heirarchical. Otherwise they would have used bullets.

Furthermore, the amount of emphasis given in the rules to aggression clearly weights the scoring system in favour of that aspect. To me it seems obvious; I guess we simply don't read English in the same way.

    Another opinion:

Effective aggression: In the extremely rare case of a judge scoring a round otherwise even, the judge might side with the boxer who was the aggressor on the theory that he is trying to make the fight.

I'm going to leave it at that. I suspect we're going around in circles.

The only thing I care about in boxing is the amount of blood measured in pints. I don't care where it comes from. Backwards, forwards, Clarissa Shields on her period during the fight, just give me blood.
