Fighter in Mid-30's coming off 2 year hiatus to fight a young Champion

Mayweather would be on a 17 month hiatus. I can probably think of many fighers coming of hiatus to beat fighters they were favored 8 to 1 to win but let me think of the ones where it really was a challege.

Vitali came off a 4 year hiatus to fight Peter.

Mosley came off a 16 month hiatus to face Floyd.

Sugar Ray Leonard came off a three year hiatus to face Hagler who was favored to end his career. Hagler may have have not been a young lion but Ortiz will never be that dangerous.

Quartey came off a two year hiatus to face DLH of all people.

Wright came off a two year hiatus to fight Paul Williams.

Ali came off a hiatus to fight Frazier.

None of those fights could even be thought of as tune-ups. These fighters came back and went straight for the top dogs. It's great yes but not incredible what Floyd is doing.

 

Thats why i give Ortiz a chance. PBF is gonna be in excellent shape no doubt since he is a gym rat but those first few early rounds where he is shaking off the rust Ortiz can use that to offset his rythm and hopefully never let him get it. Not to mention Ortiz has the strength to tangle with PBF on the inside and to be honest not very many WWs do. PBF is strong as hell in there dont be fooled by his record.

 

Not Floyd Mayweather but I am sure there are many who have done.

 

Being a young champion these days is more of a "QUESTION" mark vs anything of REAL substance. The "young champions" for the most part are inexperienced against TOP flight competition and have obtained a title either by default, fighting for a vacant title or facing anther inexperienced, over hyped creation.

It's far too easy these days to be a "titlist". No one thinks Ortiz has any resemblance of a shot to upset Floyd and the reasons are all justified. It's a good tune up fight and it's good that Ortiz will get experience in the loss, but it won't do much for Floyd's legacy.

The real question is where will this fight Lead Floyd?

And even if the guys were old, and old Hagler is much more a lion than a young Ortiz. When did Ortiz ever do what Hagler has done? When has Hagler ever give up in a fight? Floyd fighting Ortiz can't even compare to these guys. Lenard coming back to beat Hagler is better than anything Floyd can possibly do to Ortiz at this point.

 

As someone else the "champion" aspect means little. A 41-0 fighter coming off a two year hiatus to fight a young 29-2 fighter who has one fight at welterweight is an unspectacular achievement.

Didn't really want to stoop to that level and say that but hey...
He's saying it like Floyd's the only one to ever do that before. I haven't even got on the fighters 30-60 years ago. What Floyd is doing is good no doubt, but don't act like its something not done often. Floyd and "never done before" don't belong in the same sentence.

 

How old was Leonard when he fought Norris?
