Okay, I know it's only October, but it looks like all the candidates are set.

Kelly Pavlik-If the year ended tomorrow, he'd be a shoe-in. KO wins over Miranda and Taylor. Won the lineal/Ring belts at 160.

Winner of Mayweather-Hatton. If Hatton wins, he will have beaten the P4P #1 and Castillo, and won the belt at 147. If Mayweather wins, he'll have beaten a top 10 P4Per in Hatton and a future HOF-er in DLH. The rub against both Hatton and Mayweather is that their first wins were against, perhaps, over-the-hill fighters.

Winner of Cotto-Mosely. Cotto looked very good in beating Judah and Mosely looked good beating Collazo. But as good as Judah and Collazo are, is a win over either coupled with winning this fight enough to make one FOTY?

Winner of Calzaghe-Kessler. This is a major win for either fighter, but considering their oppostion in their previous fights (a tough, but unpolished Andrade for Kessler; a crappy out-of-his-league Manfredo for Calzaghe) is this win alone enough to warrent FOTY?

Any other candidates, dark-horse or otherwise?

Right now Pavlik would be the favorite.

Kessler would be a serious candidate if he beats Calzaghe.

If Hatton beats Mayweather w/o controversy, then he's pretty much a lock.

If Mayweather beats Hatton, then I don't know. Even if he dominates, I'd still be reluctant to give him the honor over Pavlik.

Those favoring Pavlik will bring up how Mayweather looked unimpressive in beating a part-time fighter in Oscar and Hatton moving up in weight, and the fact that Pavlik impressively stopped the legit champ and a top contender.

Those favoring Mayweather will bring up Oscar being a bigger guy and Taylor being such a vulnerable and flawed guy who was fortunate to be the champ due to some questionable scorecards in the past.

If Hatton wins, it's Hatton. If Hatton loses and Cotto wins, it's Cotto. If Hatton and Cotto lose, it's Pavlik.

I believe this is a two-horse race, Pavlik and Mayweather. This is a hard decision. Mayweather built an impressive resume this year. As well, so did Pavlik. Don't forget about the Zertuche fight. Pavlik fought two title elimination bouts. I personnaly have a dislike for Mayweather, not for his ability, but his personality. I think Pavlik is going to be the FOTY, because he appears to be the next highly promotable fighter.

How is wins over Zertuche, Miranda and Taylor more impressive than wins over Urkal, Judah and Mosley? All three of the fighters Cotto faced are better than the fighters Pavlik faced. I guess you can make an argument that Taylor is bigger than Mosley, but Urkal is certainly better regarded than Zertuche, and Judah is better regarded than Miranda.

IMO its out of these 4 guys:

    Cotto- If he beats Mosley
    Mayweather- If he beats Hatton
    Hatton- If he beats Mayweather
Pavlik- 2 KO wins over Miranda and Taylor

Nobody gives Kessler a shot? If he wins, he stacks up very nicely against Pavlik.

Kessler has to be a serious candidate if he wins in a couple weeks.

Those are 3 "if's" compared to 3 in the books. You forgot the Zertuche fight. No push over there.

I'd put fighter of the year as the guy who messed with perceptions and changed boxing the most as well as provided the most entertaining fights. For that I'd go with Pavlik.

Pavlik/Zertuche: While not an upset Pavlik made the most of this ( saving the night as the other fight was a snoozer ) and perhaps scored the KO of the year as he knocked Zertuche ( who had never been knocked down before ) asleep on his feet.

Pavlik/Miranda: Heavy underdog. Just Dominated and exposed Miranda for the undisiplined fighter he was.

Pavlik/Taylor: 8 to 5 underdog. Knocked down in the 2nd. Came back by sheer strength of heart. And scored an impressive KO in the 7th stealing the belt.

Pavlik is definitely the guy to beat.

No "Ifs", the winner of Floyd/Hatton is the Fighter of the Year.

    Pavlik as it stands.

If Kessler does a number on Calazaghe then it's a difficult choice between the two.

In Hattons case: He beat the #1 P4P fighter in the world, following another impressive KO victory over a very good fighter.

In Mayweathers case: He steps up and beats the #1 fighter at 154lbs, and then comes back and fights the #1 fighter at 140lbs (at WW, but still)

He barely won the fight. BoD here had it a draw and in certain circles thats all that matters :yep

And I've never seen anyones "Papi" bend over for them the way Joy Boy did at the negotiating table.
