Larry Holmes, Big George, Ray Mercer and Tommy Hearns will be able to KO the "average guy" when they're 80. It's just a matter of genetics, pedigree and temperment.

George Chuvalo still seems tremendously strong. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the ibhof induction weekend this past June, and even in his 70's George was probably one of the top 3 strongest looking people I've met in person.

true, but, technically when he died in 1917 at age 54 that was considered old for the time.

Most of the guys you call bums who've boxed for years would beat the crap out of an average guy into their 60s and 70s, they've thrown 100,000s of punches in their life, average joes haven't . Most average guys haven't got a clue about fighting, even the 1s who think they have a clue about fighting are usually pretty bad. But it depends on your definition of average guy and it depends how physically gone the boxer is.

I remember the story of an old age pensioner being mugged by 3 young lads, he had boxed amateur in the army and sparked the 3 of them

somebody started on the old rochdale thunderbolt, jock mcavoy.
jock was a victim of polio and had a specially adapted car so when mr big gob was mouthing, jock wound his window down and said you'll have to come over as i'm dis-abled.
big gob stuck his head in the car and jock knocked him out with a left hook

To a lesser extent, Frazier is also ailing. Arthritis was already taking a dreadful toll on Joe by the time of Manila, 35 years ago. A car accident resulted in horrible back trauma. Like Ali, he has spent time in a wheelchair. A tough man, but arthritis, a bad back and diabetes have turned his body against him.

From what I gather, Shavers and Chuvalo maintain an active fitness regimen. Chuvalo was a deadly puncher with both hands, a fact often overshadowed by his durability. He may not have been especially fast by the standards of world class heavyweight boxing, but against an average Joe...

Until dementia took a grip on both, I wouldn't have wanted to test either Patterson or Ingo. In the early and mid 1980s, they were running marathons. If they were alive and with healthy brains today, I still wouldn't mess with 'em. (I think Holyfield is likewise already guaranteed a shortened life with diminished brain function, and has been for some time.)

The average guy runs away or folds when someone hits him back, or if he's got some intelligence he avoids getting into fights in the first place.

Any professional boxer who remains reasonably healthy can beat the "average guy" well into his old age. But that's nothing to be proud of.

i believe that one keeps the muscle memory of how to throw a punch forever, so any ex pro or amateur could probably deal with the average thug pretty easily while they are still reasonably able
