Do you think hanging around past your prime losing to bums like Tyson did tarnishes your legacy, I think retiring on top earns you some respect.

It doesn't hurt your legacy,it hurts your health.Nobody will give the other guy credit for beating an old legend anyway.

It may too some of the more casual fans, but to those who know how far from their prime the fighter is, I don't see it mattering.

For example, Duran losing to Joppy has no effects on his legacy at all.

Ali losing to Berbick doesn't diminish his legacy in my eyes either.

I'd say it hurts your health. It'll only hurt your legacy when it comes to ppl of the next generation that dont understand what you were and what you accomplished when you were in good shape.

To the casual fan, it will. Joe Blow will look at Holyfield and RJJ and think, these guys suck. But the real fans will appreciate the glory of their prime years, and how special each was. :good

Example, Tito losing to Winky & Jones hurts his legacy in some peoples opinion. If he would've retired when he should've, he wouldn't have those losses. & now those losses are gonna hurt him when it comes to determining where he stands as an ATG

Or recently, Jones losing to Calzaghe doesn't diminish his legacy.

The Winky fight actually hurt his legacy, not the Jones fight. With Winky he was the favorite, with Jones he din't have no advantage.

Theres plenty of examples, Hearns, Ray Leonard, Ali & many others. If someone who doesnt know anything about boxing, they'll look at SRR and based on his rec, they'll say he wasnt that good.

Agreed with Cobra. The casual fan these days may not know Holyfield as anything more than an inconsistent brawler with a lot of heart, but to those of us who happen to be more educated on these matters, what he's doing now and has been doing the past decade or so really shouldn't hurt his standing as a great fighter given his success and ability in his prime, and even past it.

Tough call I guess. Really depends on how those loses are spun and interpreted.

Yeah...if RJJ retires after beating Ruiz in 2003, for example, or even after the first Tarver fight, he ends up with a better reputation that he has now.

Someone like Holyfield going on and on...and on and on and on, won't really hurt his legacy. It's almost a win-win, if you get a victory then it looks great while if you lose it's just because you're shot. On the flipside, if you're still taking punches to the head at the age of 46 then best wishes in the years to come remembering exactly all those great things you did.
