Courage Chababla or something like that. Cisse Salif was another minor bust after getting some hot press.
Gerry Cooney . His hype was incredible and after Holmes loss where he put up a courageous battle in losing it was expected he would come back stronger and more experience. After the fight even though he came back and fought Foreman and Spinks he virtually slipped into oblivion.
Very good example. Sanders mostly boxed out of South Africa and never had a professional management and could never dedicate 100% of his time to boxing. He was making part of his income with being a cop and running a car towing company (which can be a dangerous thing in South Africa). If some promoter invested enough cash into him and financed a move to the US for him who knows what could have become of him.
When Dokiwari fought and lost to Guinn, I remember Emmanuel or maybe Merchant saying Dokiwari said he sparred Ike back in their home country of Nigeria. I could be wrong, I'd have to rewatch it to be sure.
The first two that came to mind have been mentioned; Bojado and Breland - I remember some respected journalists comparing Bojado to Duran! Breland had some success as a pro but when you're built like Hearns and numerous people are saying you could rival Ray Robinson ... well, it's fair to say he never lived up to expectations. It's also unusual for someone to be feared in the amateur ranks for their power and then not being able to carry it over into the pro's.
Kirk Johnson very talented HW contender of late 90s/early 2000s, only legitimately lost 1 fight in his career against Vitali Klitschko where he showed up in horrific condition. Was easily beating Ruiz who fouled him nonstop and was awarded a bogus DQ win on fake lowblows. That fight ruined him mentally and he was never the same again. He was better than most of the early/mid 2000s belt holders like Ruiz, Rahman, Maskaev, Peter etc
Glass cannon in every sense of the word.... A lot like Price but not nearly as flawed. Poor chin, poor heart, poor stamina. Although I think the latter two flaws held him back more than anything else.
Absolutely correct. It broke Kirk's heart when he was blatantly robbed by Joe Cortez bias & John Ruiz acting. His heart wasn't in it any more It was a mere shell that faced Vitali The Kirk I knew would have given Vitali all he wanted
