    I'm sick of hearing it.

This is the most overused boxing adage.

    Fighters don't get old overnight.

Fighters get old in the gym in training camp.

    :huh

What exactly is your point? I don't think you really understand the saying.

It doesn't mean literally overnight, as in they're capable the day of the weigh-in but suddenly lose something in the span of 24 hours before stepping into the ring.

It means between one fight and the next...which, yeah, could very well show in training camp (depending on how closely their coaches are paying attention, the quality of the sparring partners brought in to push them compared with a baseline of previous experiences sparring those same people in past camps...). :huh

I really don't get what you're driving at. You might not either. :yep

Fighters might not, but I think I grew a beard during a John Ruiz fight once.

In solidarity with the Quiet Man, like some hockey and baseball fans do with their clubs? :think

You should've just grabbed your dog and hugged it until its tongue started drying out and turning blue.

thats the whole point, when people say it, they dont mean between one fight and the next.......they literally think that when it comes time to display maximum physical exertion coupled with use of skills when forced to do so, they cannot do it because they got old "OVERNIGHT" , hence why the saying finishes with the word "overnight".

your not forced in training camp or in sparring to display what your most capable of because: your sparring partner may not be skilled enough to bring that out of you; sparring is not as intense as a prize fight; you taper down towards end of training camp.

your team may notice you slowing down but wont say it because they want the fight to go ahead so they get a pay check or dont want to affect your confidence.

I don't really disagree, I'm just not sure I've ever come across someone using that expression and believed they actually thought it meant literally overnight.

More of just a saying, you know?

Well IB, as you know most fights happen during the night for me. One morning I got up after a long one, and when I looked in the mirror I saw my father. (No he was not standing next to me smartass!)

So it actually can happen overnight :bart
