Yes I would agree they are mentally tougher or at the very least have more drive because of their upbringing. I live in south Texas and the work ethic the Mexicans bring with them is unmatched by American born workers. These guys just show up and work sun up to sun down no complaining, no excuses, no showing up late and no asking to leave early.

Its just the upbringing. I'm a Caribbean black and most people think its just easy living, but we have great pride, very close to nature live off the land, I mean rural, and close to african traditions moreso than african americans who we consider very spoiled and give black people a bad image. Some people tho, esp, latinos, still have a war like mentality so when it comes to sports like boxing or mma they will always have someone up there. Like Mexico for instance, but countries like Brazil are a hotbed of basically all cultures blending together and being taught Japanese jiu jitsu. Imagine gracie jujitsu being born in haiti or Dominican republic I'm not sure it'd have the same impact as in Brazil. Latins probably because of the spanish conqueror love fighting. I mean they love futbol, baseball, basketball too, but reason why boxing has always been huge with latinos.

It is a series of variables coming together.

One, you have to have the natural attributes to be a good boxer. You can have all the toughness and desire in the world, but if you don't have the physical make-up, you can forget it.

Natural attributes go beyond the physical, viewable exterior. Take Alex Ramos, for example. Tough guy, physically gifted, except for the fact that he couldn't absorb the punishment, the way he could dish it out.

We tend to forget that by the time we are viewing professionals on TV, these guys have already gone through the "filtering process." The guys who are physically gifted but lacking in a key area, have already been filtered out.

Second, once the natural attributes are met, the guy needs to have the desire and competitive nature to prevail. I think there are a lot of guys who are naturally physically gifted, who have the skill set to excel but lack the grit to rise to the top in boxing.

The reason we probably see more guys succeeding in boxing who are from poor backgrounds is because they have less options. When you have less options you tend to view things in a more life or death scenario. You know that if you don't do it right here, right now there may not be a better option that comes again. The guys who are smart enough to understand this have an "all in" mentality. Ward and Gatti come to mind. Neither guy was truly physically gifted but they were both extreme competitors who internally felt this was their best real shot at becoming anything.

No offense, but if African people in the Caribbean are so much advanced than African Americans then why don't they fix their homelands instead of abandoning them? Solve your issues of generational poverty there in your country before you address it here. THEN you'd impress us. If Africans Americans moved to a country and jump shipped like immigrants for a fresh start, then they'd shoot up the economic ladder too.

Stevenson and Fonfara are both from third world countries and both showed a good fight.

You have guys with great chins like Kassim Ouma, Ike Ibeabuchi, Roberto Duran, etc. from comparatively impoverished countries. But, you also have guys like George Chuvalo, David Tua, and Vitali Klitscho, from places that are better off, so I am not sure there is anything there. Toughness, is part mental. The other part physical gift. You can hit some guys with a sledge hammer, and they keep on coming. I have seen plenty of guys from third world countries get KO'd. I have seen plenty that take a hell of a beating, before getting stopped. And I have seen some take a hell of a beating, and not look worse for the wear after the fight was over.

If you think Poland is third world, you need some good geography lessons

That would explain why there are so many Mexican champions.

Because Mexico is a poor country, with gang wars and drug cartels.

Also, if you think Poland is even close to being a third world country, you're incredibly ignorant.

Any person who wants to survive would do anything to live, and some few fighters boxers were just tough because they were motivated by their desire to be great.
