Fighters from history who have fought at hw then beat the top lhw in the next fight?

Mind Reader asked me this question:

Now, I know that Bob Foster beat a tomato can in a heavyweight fight before he knocked out Tiger for the lhw title, and that Archie Moore beat Nino Valdes in his previous fight to creaming Bobo Olson for the 175 strap, but that's the only suggestions I can muster.

I thought Carpentier was another decent shout, seeing as he followed hw defeat to Dempsey by beating Kid Lewis for the lhw belt, but I checked boxrec and he did have a fight in between these two, plus Lewis wasn't really "the man" at light-heavy, considering he weighed 157lbs!

    Any more answers anyone?

I think John Henry Lewis outpointed Eddie Simms sometime in 1936 and then outpointed Jock McAvoy about a week or so later for the light heavyweight title. I also think he beat Jack Kranz one fight before stopping Bob Olin in 1937.

In fact, I think he did this sort of thing a few times even if the names he beat weren't the absolute cream of the crop.

Gonna try and sneck out a couple more if I can......

    Why would you want to?

If you just beat a ranked heavyweight, then you have unfinished business at heavyweight.

You either sh1t at that weight, or get off the toilet.

Loughran beat Pat McCarthy, then Slattery.

    Rosenbloom beat Hoffman then Slattery.

Harold Johnson beat Eddie Machen then beat Eddie Cotton.

We can go on and on, as I am sure there a lot more.

It probably gets harder if we're talking elite level heavyweights. It's like janitor says, you might be more inclined to have a serious stab at heavyweight if you take out a top contender convincingly rather than dropping back down to light heavy.

I suppose JHL did in the end - not that it ended well for him, as most people know. Or most of the other 24 for that matter.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad lost to Renaldo Snipes at Heavyweight, then lost to Michael Spinks for the Light Heavyweight Title.

Jimmy Slattery beat Tom Heeney then lost his Light Heavyweight Title to Maxie Rosenbloom.

Freddie Mills loss to Bruce Woodcock, then lost his Light Heavyweight Title to Joey Maxim.
