For Larry Holmes, the jab versus Ocasio, knockdown rights in both fights with Weaver (in 1979 from an uppercut, 2000 from a cross), and a rib cartilage separating right hand to the body of Paul Poirier which Poirier describes as the hardest punch he was ever hit by.

Joe Frazier has suggested in an interview with Jim Clash that the final hook he floored Ellis with in their first bout may have been the hardest shot he ever landed. The FOTC knockdown was impressive, but many consider the knee buckler which caught Ali against the ropes in round 11 to have been a more damaging blow.

Shavers has indicated that the right he floored Holmes with was probably the hardest shot of his career.

The hook Benvenuti wiped out Rodriguez with was his punch of a career. Nino himself lost the title to a deadly right from Monzon.

Obviously the best hook of Ali's career came against Bonavena, while his hardest right was probably the one which felled Foreman. His jab, known more for it's speed, may have been at the hardest for the rematch with Quarry. Jack Palance was even speculating during that bout that Ali might be able to produce a knockout with it under the right circumstances.

Liston blew over the huge Wepner with a short right to the midsection. The footage makes it clear that Chuck wasn't off balance, yet got knocked on his back by the force behind the blow, which Sonny delivered with great leverage.

Patterson's "Hook from Hell" on Ingo is a wide favorite, but Floyd also downed London for the count with a loud right whack to the body.

  3. Thomas Hearns v Pipino Cuevas
Thomas Hearns V Roberto Duran , this one especially considering the quality of opponent
Lennox Lewis v Andrew Golota , first round knockout and tremendous display of power against a fellow ' Super Heavyweight ' Golota was seriously hurt by Lewis , also this performance displayed Lewis's ability to ' finish ' an opponent

Louis described the punch he floored Uzcudun with as the hardest single blow of his career, and referee Arthur Donovan (an eminently qualified eyewitness) agreed.

I suppose 'power' is quite subjective. Foreman's almost literal steamroll of Norton was as immovable an assault as I've ever seen; but if you add speed and precision into the equation? Many Louis, Robinson and Tyson moments will feature, but I maintain that the one attack I've seen which ranks above all else is Ike Williams' first round knockout of Jose Gatica. At least you sense that someone other than Norton could have avoided Foreman's bombardment, but Williams, having been pressured by Gatica from the opening bell, stung back with real venom. It seemed totally irresistable, because the speed and accuracy backing up that power just obliterated.

This is why I genuinely believe Williams was one of the very greatest punchers ever, alongside the likes of Louis, Armstrong* and Robinson. Though his paltry knockout ratio fails his reputation, Williams at peak performance was mesmerising. The Beau Jack stoppage is another one.

*Armstrong was seriously an absolute war machine between 126 and 135lbs - hardly anyone survived him. 59-1-1 (51) over three weights and three years is something that may never be equalled.

Shavers uppercut on jimmy ellis - left him in dreamland
The brown bombers right hand on buddy baer - spun him like a record.
and perhaps the finest punch ever delivered IMO, SRR's left hook on Fullmer - poetry in motion
