Yes there have been countless disputed decisions and outright robberies in boxing history, but this isn’t about that.

I want to explore fighters who lost for some other reason who should have gotten a rematch but did not.

    A few examples:

Gerrie Coetzee vs. Greg Page: Coetzee lost his WBA heavyweight title at the 3:48 mark of the eighth round due to timekeeper error. In short, he should have been about to get up from his stool for round nine when the bout ended with Page stopping Gerrie. Instead of a rematch, the WBA upheld the result and Page was defending some five months later against Tony Tubbs … who beat him by decision.

Marcel Cerdan vs. Jake LaMotta: Jake took the title when Cerdan retired on his stool with only one working arm after trying to make a go of it despite an injury suffered apparent, IIRC, when LaMotta wrestled/threw him to the canvas. He was set to rematch Jake but died in a plane crash.

What are some other such oddities?

Not sure if this counts, but Foreman never got another chance at Ali after his defeat.

Gomez vs Sanchez. Gomez was pretty much a heroin addict at that point and didn't take the Sanchez fight seriously. A rematch was in progress and Gomez took training seriously this time but Sanchez died in a car accident.

Taylor deserved an immediate rematch against Chavez.

Rodrigo Valdez was mentally not all there in the first Carlos Monzón fight, his brother got murdered a few days before the fight

He ended up getting a rematch a year later.

I wish more rivalries had immediate rematch clauses, in the sense of LaMotta and Robinson whose 2nd and 3rd encounters were just 21 days apart. If Ali and Frazier had re-matched within a month of their first bout I think would make a terrific fight.

Additionally I wish there had been a 3rd Walcott and Marciano fight, the 2nd ended so quick and its a pretty big red flag that it was Walcott's time to hang up the gloves (which I'm glad he took) but I still would've like to see a trilogy between the two.

Zarate never beats Gomez at Super Bantamweight, he was wise not to fight him again.

I know what you mean but George did n't help himself by going AWOL for over a year following the RITJ. Not exactly a strong sign of someone hungry for a rematch.

Vitali should have got a rematch against Lewis. Would have like to have seen a 2nd fight between Wlad against both Fury an Joshua

Agreed, also Baer apparently had a hand injury when he fought Louis, and never got a rematch. Louis would have won, but the rematch was deserved nonetheless, and Baer remained a top contender for years to come.

Taylor's lucky they didn't have an immediate rematch because if they had he'd be in an even worse state today than he is.

I felt John H Stracey deserved a rematch with Dave "Boy" Green. Green butted John mercilessly in the early going of their fight and was probably on a final warning from Harry Gibbs.
John was holding his own but was stopped because of his injuries.

I feel like Ken Buchanan should have gotten a rematch with Duran after the controversial stoppage where he was pretty much KO'd by a low blow.

Mikkel Kessler should have also gotten a rematch against Andre Ward after all the headbutts he was taking from Ward.
