What fighters were the most vastly overrated, based off one win? My pick goes to Antonio Tarver, constantly was being touted as this amazing fighter based off one win vs. a fastly declining Roy Jones. I know they fought three times, but his knockout made him into this extremely overhyped fighter, when in reality he has been little more than a gatekeeper.
most of the one punch fluke guys or upsets. Tarver, Barkley, Douglas. If they don't prove that they can win against other guys, it really didn't mean much. Had more to do with the careers of the guys they beat and could those greats comeback and redeem themselves. Neither Jones or Hearns could beat Tarver or Barkley again in the rematches.
yeah he was, although like Barkley he was strong and fought every round tough. So a diminishing older guy is susceptible to that kind of fighter. I remember when Booker T Word beat Anthony Hembrick. Hembrick was not a top fighter yet but he had promise. They underestimated Word's power, and Word never got close to winning a title.
Tarver beat an over the hill Jones, who had completely ruined his body coming back down from heavyweight, it destroyed him. Even if he beat him in the rematch, he would have been a cake walk for Roy Jones Jr. in Roy's prime. Tarver did NOT deserved to be hyped as this amazing fighter from being RJJ at that point.
I agree, but same with Hearns. Hearns prior to being stopped by Barkley had fought at 175 and won the title and came back down to 160 after beating Roldan. Losing a lot of weight after fighting higher can weaken a guy. I never thought Tarver was great, and Hopkins proved it pretty much.
Oh yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with Hearns at all. Every single time I've seen Tarver fight, his only claim to fame is wins over RJJ. I don't EVER remember seeing a guy get so many undeserved fights based off riding the coat tail of a single win, ever. Hopkins made Tarver look like a complete idiot, the Hopkins that fought Tito would have knocked Tarver out. Speaking of which, I just thought of another good one, since you mentioned the "one punch KO" people. Hasim Rahman sure has been overrated from his Lewis victory. Was getting his ass kicked prior to that punch, and completely sucked in the rematch too. Since then, has done NOTHING, but was still touted for a long time as this great contender.
Rahman is another one yeah. I always thought Rahman was similar to Barkley in that he fought everyone, but had one or two great wins and was solid. But not great.
Aaron pryor....Arguello was great a Lil past prime and at his forth weight nor to mention the bottle incident...aside from past it Cervantes his resume is shallow and people make him out to be a beast. He was great but his ledger is no better than Hatton who gets tagged on all the time on here who also beat an Atg bat his weight tszyu and a past it great don't a lower weight Castillo. Although he lost to Mayweather and Pacquiao he went after the best pryor had other options besides Leonard and Hearn a he fought a longtime at lightweight and could have fought Mancini Camacho Ramirez Rosario Roger Mayweather etc.
