    THE TOP LIGHTWEIGHTS OF THE CENTURY

    As voted by a five-member panel (Futch/Dundee/Clancy/Duva/Chargin) of experts assembled by Associated Press. First-place votes are in parenthesis; points based on 10 points for a first-place vote down to one point for a 10th-place vote. When a division has five selections, a first-place vote is worth five points.

    LIGHTWEIGHTS

    1 Roberto Duran (3) 41

    2 Benny Leonard 37

    3 Tony Canzoneri 33

    4 Ike Williams 28

    5 Joe Gans (2) 21

    6= Lou Ambers 20

    6= Alexis Arguello 20

    8 Julio Cesar Chavez 13

    9 Beau Jack 12

    10 Carlos Ortiz 7

    Lots of love for Canzoneri. None for Whitaker probably because he was still active like Hopkins, Lewis etc. First place votes split between Duran and Gans.

    These "experts" seem to exclude the deepest eras of boxing! I keep seeing their lists and they are awful.

    I'm surprised Benny Leonard didn't receive any 1st place votes.

    Beau Jack was a great fighter but i don't think he should make the top 10.

    Sammy Mandell should be on the list.

    As much a Julio homer as I am, and that I do believe 135 was his best weight, he only had a cup of coffee in that division. He had 3 (?) important fights at that weight???

    I reckon that your boxing knowledge compares to that of Eddie Futch, Gil Clancy, Angelo Dundee, Lou Duva and Don Chargin.

    oh boy------ Chavez? a bit too low. Against Duran at 135? Maybe Duran too skilled. Not taking anyone else against Chavez. That does include BL and AA. Just an old fashioned tough, tough fighter. The Taylor fight summarizes everything. {140} He was losing by a comfortable margin against a very skilled. tenacious Philly fighter. What no one ...I dare say----- watching that fight--realized was how bad MT was hurting. We all thought he had won the fight.... No marks on Chavez. MT ----permanent brain damage. Taylor certainly might have been more skilled. But Chavez? we all know those type of guys that you leave alone. Good list . More research..... Thanks
