Name the fighter of the year (in your opinion) for each year of the past 10 years. 2011: so far.... 2010: 2009: 2008: 2007: 2006: 2005: 2004: 2003: 2002: 2001:
2011: Donaire (so far) 2010: Martinez 2009: Pacquiao 2008: Pacquiao or Darchinyan. I had Marquez winning by a point against Manny, so he's a contender too (also beat Casamayor for the Ring LW title). Pacquiao moved up and dominated Diaz and DLH. 2007: Pavlik 2006: I don't know. I have a tough time giving it to Pacquiao given that all his fights came against guys coming off of defeats, including Larios who went up 2 divisions. On the other hand, it wasn't a strong year for other candidates. Wlad? Floyd? 2005: Hatton. Not too educated on Lorenzo Parra's fights, but I know he had a hell of a year too. 2004: Not sure, maybe Tarver or Barrera. Just like for 2008, It's kind of tough when you take into account official winners and your personal scorecards on close fights. I had Tarver beating Johnson 115-113. 2003: Pacquiao 2002: Forrest 2001: B-Hop
2011: bhop so far 2010: martinez 2009: pacman 2008: pacman* 2007: Mayweather 2006: Pacman 2005: Hatton 2004: Barrera 2003: Pacman* 2002: Forrest 2001:Hopkins Pacquiao definitely deserved 2008, jumping from 130-135-147 in one year, winning one lineal championship, 2 alphabet belts, then jumping up 2 divisions to defy the odds and retire Oscar. 2003, im being biased could also have went to toney
04- Johnson 05- Tarver or Hatton 06- Mayweather 07- Mayweather 08- Pacquiao 09- Pacquiao 10- Martinez I think Tarvers' W Johnson II and W Jones Jr. III in 2005 is def no worse than Hatton's year (he won The Ring FOTY). 2006 is a very tough one. I do think Pacquiao got a gift of an award for this one (before you quote me and start a firestorm, I give him 08 and 09 so no hatred here...) 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2010 are the easiest to pick. Bolded because an argument for anyone else is... difficult to make.
2011 to this point- Donaire Question, how could you say Hopkins? Is a close UD over Pascal better than an early KO of Montiel?
I don't know but I know what the future holds 2012 - Broner 2013 - Broner 2014 - Broner 2015 - Broner 2016 - Some other guy cuz Broner stars in a feature length film. 2017 - Broner 2018 - Broner 2019 - Broner 2020 - President?
2001: Bernard Hopkins 2002: Vernon Forrest 2003: Manny Pacquiao 2004: Marco Antonio Barrera 2005: Ricky Hatton 2006: Manny Pacquiao 2007: Floyd Mayweather Jr 2008: Manny Pacquiao 2009: Manny Pacquiao 2010: Sergio Martinez 2011: Nonito Donaire Hopkins can grab the 2011 spot if he beats Chad Dawson impressively, which would be amazing considering he won the FOTY award 10 years ago at the age of 36.
Well heres the list from Ring Mag 2000s 2000 – Puerto Rico Félix Trinidad 2001 – United States Bernard Hopkins 2002 – United States Vernon Forrest 2003 – United States James Toney (2) 2004 – Jamaica Glen Johnson 2005 – United Kingdom Ricky Hatton 2006 – Philippines Manny Pacquiao 2007 – United States Floyd Mayweather Jr. (2) 2008 – Philippines Manny Pacquiao (2) 2009 – Philippines Manny Pacquiao (3) 2010s 2010 – Argentina Sergio Martínez
I don't think beating Pascal is more impressive than Montiel, so I guess Donaire would be favored at this point. However, I think Pascal-Dawson would be a more impressive pair of victories than Montiel-Naravez. Even if Donaire manages to get in one more fight at 122 before the end of the year, I think it would still be difficult to put him ahead of Hopkins assuming both win out.
