More and more fights are being postponed and delayed even canceled these days which pisses a lot of boxing fans.. Fighters pulling out of a fight due to failure of making weight, injuries during sparring sessions and even a toothache which could trouble the other fighter come fight night.. Does anybody think these excuses are 100% legit or just simply bull****?
I dont know but its becoming more often. To name a few this month: Haye, May, Montiel, Koltelnik, and Mike alvarado. This month was supposed to be one of the best boxing months of the year and so far its been awesome but just imagine how it could have been.
**** happens. Just like a couple years ago in the fall of 2007, fights are getting postponed and cancelled. Sometimes it's legit, sometimes it's for other reasons. Roberto Duran's team (Carlos Eleta) didn't want him to fight an old Carlos Ortiz at the garden, apparently they weren't happy with his preparation, so they made up an excuse about him being sick. Mike Tyson kept pulling out of a title defense against Razor Ruddock. The official reasons were injury and illness I believe, but Tyson later said it was just because he was in condition to fight, he wasn't training. There's always been speculation on Tyson pulling out of the scheduled Evander Holyfield fight in 1991 was really injured ribs or just the distraction of the **** trial coming up. Sugar Ray Robinson used to pull out of fights all the time for various reasons.
The thing with Boxing is you dont want guys going in the ring unless they are 100%. If they do then thats when guys can get seriously hurt. I do think some of the reasons for call offs are pretty naff and there should be some sort of punishment for dodgy call offs.
Some are completely legitimate, some are the result of people who ***** too much and don't know how to battle through a tiny ailment, and some aren't legitimate at all. This is how it is, and how it always has been in all sports at all times. I'm not sure that it's particularly more common now, or whether we're just going through a rough month.
