Changing ethnic names was prevalent from the '20s to the '40s, when boxing flourished, 'specially in N.Y., the center of the boxing universe then. Irish 'n Italians took Jewish names 'n Jews took Irish 'n Italian names. Every ethnic group had big fan bases in N.Y. Promoters cleaned-up pitting one ethnic against another.
