The evidence against Carter was flimsy at best, the evidence against Artis was laughable. Rather than watching the mediocre at best movie; I suggest you read the more balanced and more engrossing book 'Hurricane; The life of Rubin Carter, fighter.'
Davey Hilton-Sick ******* Abe Attell-Cheating ******* Ike Ibeabuchi-Crazy ******* James Toney-Loud mouthed,classless,steroid filled ******* Tony Ayala-Evil ******* James Butler-See above ******* Naseem Hamed-Cocky ******* Billy Papke-Mean ******* Clifford Etienne-Crack head,thug ******* Jeff Fenech-Nasty *******
He hardly qualifies as a 'complete *******', a man who devoted much of his time to God and is liked by almost everyone who met him (apart from jealous, classless buffoons like Larry Holmes). Even Ali said, in 1975, that he didn't understand why Foreman acts all broody and mean and doesn't speak to the press when he's a nice guy underneath. Who's your other choice: Earnie Shavers? :huh
Newspapers tend to have agenda's one way or another. Just because Carter was not the nicest person in the world, indeed he comes across as a 'complete *******' sometimes, does not mean he should be stiched up for murder. The documents and evidence in the case were not enough to convict Carter, at least not in Britain.
As for the murder convictions: meh. But he was a nasty peice of work as it stands. I once read he told Grifith: You are a like a woman who wants to be raped. Very interesting choice of words that.
There's a story that he stopped his wife for speeding and gave her a ticket. Surely that isn't to be held against him?
He was even accused of assault when he was out on bail but the old 'mysteriously dropped' chestnut emerged. The poor girl probably had her life threatened. Then again, she's bound to be lying, as was the witness who said he was bribed not to testify- he was obviously lying too. Everyone was, except Carter. :nut
Of course, every bit of press concerning the Carter case seemed to have an agenda, every document in the case had an agenda, anyone who knows the story has their own spin on it. But what is true, is the conviction was unsafe, (hence the retrial) and the conviction would of been less likely to of happened in other States and countries.
Lamotta Robinson Ayala Jr. Foreman ( pre-boxing) Tyson Liston Lyle Graziano( pre-boxing) Ibeabuchi etc.................... There are a lot of them who were bad people who say boxing saved them for the most part, and some that it didnt save
