RJJ is probably the best I've seen at this. Anyone got good examples of other fighters that where great at countering the counter punch?
speed is what does this. I remember when Benitez fought Hearns, Benitez could avoid Tommy's body punches and head punches, but not his jab. And then Tommy started to counterpunch with his speed and jab. Speed can counteract any counterpuncher. That is why Floyd would always beat Marquez and Floyd would become the counterpuncher always.
Jose Napoles was excellent at this. He did it all night vs Griffith in '69, just to name one example.
Jones was so special i'm not even sure he qualifies. Dude would hit people as soon as they made the merest suggestion they were getting into position to punch Is that counter-punching?
Maybe in some relative sense, but Marquez countered Pacquiao to death in four fights whilst at a pretty reasonable disadvantage in speed.
Loving the Harold Johnson avatar. And Napoles is a great shout. For a not fast guy how about Salvador Sanchez? Lead, you counter, he counters. It was his thing.
Most very good\great counterpunching or even just brawling\aggressive fighters that love to get into protracted exchanges have to be able to do this. Course it helps if you have the speed advantages.
