Fighters That Could Counter the Counter Punch

speed is what does this. I remember when Benitez fought Hearns, Benitez could avoid Tommy's body punches and head punches, but not his jab. And then Tommy started to counterpunch with his speed and jab. Speed can counteract any counterpuncher. That is why Floyd would always beat Marquez and Floyd would become the counterpuncher always.

 

Jose Napoles was excellent at this. He did it all night vs Griffith in '69, just to name one example.

 

Nigel Benn was doing it in his second fight with Eubank

Telegraphing/predictability/lack of defense mitigates speed sometimes though, 'same move every time'

 

Loving the Harold Johnson avatar. And Napoles is a great shout. For a not fast guy how about Salvador Sanchez? Lead, you counter, he counters. It was his thing.

 

Most very good\great counterpunching or even just brawling\aggressive fighters that love to get into protracted exchanges have to be able to do this.


Course it helps if you have the speed advantages.
