i have always been interested in fighters that could create such a psychological edge and atmosphere before/during the fight that they where able to beat greater talented fighters.

duran vs. leonard was a great example in how duran pinheaded all of leanard anger to the point that he felt he had to fight durans fight. duran of course was a great talent of his own.

the best example for my thread that i could give in how a fighter stacked the odds all into his favor to beat a greatly talented undefeated fighter is when greg haugen beat hector comacho. haugen did such a great job in creating the element for his upset.

he worked the crowd, teased comacho, swaying the judges to score him a fight that could have easily (maybe more easily) have gone the other way. it was absolutely brilliant on his part in how he got comacho to try to hit him on the last round touching of gloves to get a point taken away. how the crowd cheered for haugens plain looking ducking counters over comachos incredible handspeed. it showed me that the fight itself is only a portion of the means to achieve victory and how intelligence can overcome actual boxing skill.

    WRONG:deal

How many times does it take for you people too be told to not keep swallowing the MYTH!!!!

Leonard fought his own fight in Montreal & he did NOT fight Duran's fight. Sugar Ray Leonard has time & time again told you lot this & none of you want to belive it. If he came onto ESB now & said i fought the correct fight in Montreal because i was younger/bigger/faster/better & more powerfull than Duran you'd all say NO RAY.......IT'S WAS'NT LIKE THAT.......YOU FOUGHT THE WRONG FIGHT RAY:lol:

It's just anothe Angelo Dundee damage limitation exorcise that was & has been readily swallowed by all sugarbabies who could'nt believer their eyes that it was Duran who outboxed/outfought & outhought Leonard that night & Leonards said as much himself........

****-all wrong with leonards tactics as they saved him from being KO'd......the best man one:deal

    End thread:smoke

I think Steve Collins got to alot of people. You just couldn't intimidate the guy and you knew he was going to keep coming all night. The guns weren't that powerful, but they were always blazing.

    I loved Collins

Well Bernard Hopkins did to Tito. I think he could beat him without tricks though.

If Sugar Ray Leonard would of shown Duran abit of movement and slickness in the first fight, Duran would of quit there and then.

You're dead right about this...Haugen , though not an alltime great talent by any means, was a smart fighter and should be credited as such, especially in this first fight with Camacho...he got into Hector's head all right, esp. at the beginning of that last round. By the way, don't expect many other posters to agree with this...but they'll be wrong.

Ricardo Mayorga was very good at this. He was utterly talentless but got into Vernon Forrests head pretty good.

Hard to find a better example. Collins even said in the post-fight interview 'We fooled them all' (or words to that effect) whilst laughing

Ricardo Mayorga, the chain smoking street brawler defeating Vernon Forrest twice is a prime example, on paper he should not be winning this fight. He also had the better of Shane Mosley until the last minute KO.

What does it tell you? That his unorthodox style was all wrong for these two elite fighters? Or that he had a massive pyschological edge over Forrest and a fair one over Mosley, that compensated for the gap in skill? It certainly wasnt a toughness he had over Mosley as Mosley is equally tough.

I think a notoriously brave, fearless De La Hoya absolutely wrecking his ass proves this to be the case

The Sonny Liston staredown is the template for getting in someone's head. Also, it was always said that Jack Sharkey created it. The classic line of Jack Dempsey after their pre-fight instructions, "Why is he staring at me?" Or something to that effect. Another is the Leonard-Kalule fight. Kalule's people were really getting to Leonard. He was buying into the whole voodoo thing. One of Kalule's guys even brought in a "witch doctor", who went to the Leonard gym while he was sparring, casting spells and such. Who knew that Leonard was the superstitious type? Kalule himself showed balls. He wanted none of this and went to the Leonard camp to tell him so. But even still, Leonard wore black trunks that night with snakes (or was it dragons) on his trunks because he read that black and the reptiles were used to combat voodoo.
