The Daily Mirror report on the fight suggested Bugner was below par and too defensive, only interested in doing just enough to win in the fight. The title of this thread is too cruel IMO. Most fighters who lose their lives in the ring, are deaths triggered by their final opponent, not caused by the final opposition, but by all the opposition they had fought.
I'll agree with that, but it doesn't change the psychological trauma one would go through being the one who ended a life in the ring. Doesn't matter how many people add to setting up someone's demise, the weight falls on the shoulders of the guy who threw the last punch. A sadist might get pleasure out of knowing he could kill a man with a punch, but your average person would be damaged for a long time.
Yes, sadly, it can ruin a man. I remember Richie Wenton basically breaking down in his comeback fight following his victory over Bradley Stone, where Stone sadly died. Wenton did end up making a career for himself, but there was no doubt the Stone fight scarred him. Barry McGuigan is not my favourite person, but there can be doubt the trauma and guilt he felt after the death of Young Ali. Not that McGuigan in anyway did anything wrong, it is just sadly one of them things. It almost cost McGuigan his career. But there was a myth with Bugner, that the sad demise of Regis perhaps led to his reputation of not giving a 100%. The evidence of reports pre Regis and indeed for the Regis fight itself, suggest otherwise. That is not to say, the fight did not leave an impression on Bugner. Under the gruff character (gimmick), Bugner seemed a decent fella, and what happened was not nice for Bugner. But (rightly) your thoughts have to be primarily to Regis' family, and thus Bugner's mental state is very much a secondary issue.
Ray robinson killed Jimmy Doyle in the ring in a world welterweight title fight, after he had previously dreamed he would kill him if they fought. Ray didnt want to fight Doyle after that dream, but was convinced by a priest. Odd circumstances.
Former Contender/fringe contender David Gonzalez killed 2 fighters in the ring. One was Rico velasquez and the other (i think Robert kamya?).. Too happen twice to one fighter is rare. Gonzalez fought from Lw to JM.
That tremendously comprehensive catalog of ring fatalities did not include Resto-Collins, and maybe it should have.
