I was just thinking of some of the great fighters that learned the sport whilst incarcerated: Sonny Liston, Bernard Hopkins, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, and Ron Lyle.

With so many fighters coming from tough backgrounds and the well worn adage of chosing a life of crime or the boxing gym it occurred to me that Boxing must be the only sport where getting locked up (obviously not on a long stretch) could start or improve a fighters development.

Any other great fighters or world champs that first learned to box in prison? Or interesting accounts of the boxer / convict?

Yes, indeed. No need for the question mark because it has recently been established as a fact as far as I'm concerned. The evidence is circumstantial, but compelling.

Isaiah Chase was locked up in the Colorado Industrial School and the Colorado Reformatory for most of his teenage years. The Reformatory certainly had a boxing program that staged fights for the public. The Industrial School did in the 40s and probably did as well in the 20s and 30s. As an adult, Chase served two terms at Canon City. The prison there also had a boxing program. He was released after his first stint in December 1935. At the end of January 1936, Chase fought as "Young Joe Louis" in his first professional fight.

If Jack Chase didn't learn how to box inside, then my name is Mary Poppins.

watch teh 2002 film called Undesputed - it based on true story of Tyson in prision. He gets his ASS beated by prison-champ just like in Real-life. Ving Rhames did v.good job of acting as Tyson - But more craziness would of been brill.:thumbsup

Tyson went to Juvie, but this thread is about learning to box while behind bars. He learnt in the Catskills while staying with Cus.
