"Hard Rock" Green", Frank "The Animal" Fletcher, etc....those early 80's MW types who fought hard for the fans on NBC Sportsworld / CBS Sports Spectacular on Sat/Sunday afternoons.
Ricardo Rocky Juarez . 5 world title challenges. Credit though to Rocky he was though incredibly durable and never stopped in world title fights or his career.
It's actually surprising when you consider the talent he had. He had a run of 3 career defining fights (Lopez, De La Hoya, Vargas) that were all winnable, but it just didn't come together on the night. If he had been more active it may have made a difference, but sometimes it comes down to the intangibles.
Juan Laporte fought all the names in and around featherweight in the 80s but I don't think he ever beat one of the A list.
Danilo Cabrera Gave McGuigan a good fight, losing via 14th round tko. Then was rushed into a fight with Azumah Nelson. Later lost to JC Chavez.
LOL. He won plenty of big fights. Yes, those were the two biggest, but of course he was not near prime for either guy.
Rocky Lockridge was "A" list. Lockridge greatly troubled Eusebio Pedroza twice losing two close decisions. He lost a close decision to JC Chavez, decisoned Cornelius Boza-Edwards and starched Roger Mayweather in one round. He twice won a version of the 130 lb title. He never tried to rematch with LaPorte again while 130 lb. champ. LOL. That LaPorte iced him in two with one brutal punch is a Gold Star Win. Nobody else did that to Lockridge.
De La Hoya was the first name that came to mind. How many great fighters have lost that many of their biggest fights and still been considered 'great'?
