Mixed martial arts is a rough game to say the least. We're talking about 5 minute rounds, smaller gloves, elbows and knees to the face, etc. Frankly, I don't know how many boxers would cut it. I did however, hear that boxers transcend better into MMA, than vice versa. Anyway, here are some folks who might have survived. Tex Cobb was both a kickboxer and a conventional boxer, along with being pretty tough on the streets. I think he might actually have had a chance. Vitali Klitschko was a both a boxer and kickboxer, along with being extremely strong and durable. Who knows how he might have done. I imagine there are some others.
Jeremy Williams is OK. Kermit Contron would do OK as well, I guess. He was a decent wrestler. Those guys you mentioned would be no good. The type of kickboxing Vitali did is not the 'kickboxing' you see in MMA anyway, and would be less use than western boxing. The lanky frame is a disadvantage in MMA, unlike boxing, as well. So, there are boxers who'de do well in MMA, but not really because of their boxing skills; modern boxing has just become too distant from real fightng for it to be a very effective fighting style. Maybe some of the OLD OLD timers who were allowed to do real fighting in the clinch, with smaller gloves etc could take a few more skills into MMA, I don't know.
He didn't. He had one match in K1 (watered down Muay Thai rules) against a guy who was niether a boxer nor a kickboxer (Tom Erikson). Erikson would have killed him in an MMA match.
If you can punch and have some takedown defence, you can win the ufc title. that was essentiallty all liddell was, a big puncher you cant take down... Cintron would have shot.
Botha was in K-1, which is a kickboxing organization. He had some success. If I wasn't in school I'd post the vid of him being KD'd thrice in the first round and stopped by Mighty Mo, all from punches.
What about Greg Haugen, I know he used to do those tough guy competitions when he was young. What did they involve?
What? Because its founder was a karatake? This has zero bearing on what K1 is today. K-1 is exactly the same as Muay Thai but with a few of the brutal techniques omitted, and is absolutely nothing like a karate match. Why do I get involved in this? I'll be trying to convince someone Bruce Lee couldn't beat Mark Kerr next...
Epic fail. Guys like Ruiz and Waldo Klitschko do illustrate how far boxing has become separated from real fighting though; jab, lunge and hold; referee rescues. :-(
