Boxing is a big money sport, at least it should be. Every time a boxer steps in to the ring he's literally taking his life in his hands, and of course money has to play a big part in it. But then with some fighters it feels like it's all about the money. Doing the bare minimum to just get through bout and to be paid the maximum amount. Floyd Mayweather symbolises that more than most. But what of the guys that if push came to shove you feel like they would fight for a dime? Because of pride and wanting to show the world there the best at what they do. It's a hypothetical question of course because why should they fight for nothing with the risks they take. Imo guys like dempsey, Duran, Hagler, that if they must fight just out of pride and be rewarded with nothing but respect, then they would do just that. It's not going to happen obviously but just trying to sum up certain fighters mentality. Which figures do you feel fit the criteria?
Let's be honest here I don't know of any kid that takes up boxing merely because of money, there's much easier ways to earn a living.
Oh definitely Wass but would they fight for nothing? And that s not really what I was trying to say. It was more the fighting mentality of some boxer s. Pride and being top dog rather than take a chunk of money and content to lose. It was more about a fighter willing to beat the best rather than how much money he can make. Dempsey would have took a dollar if he had to to fight willard. Just to prove he was the best heavyweight out there.
When Sonny Liston spoke of his future fight with Patterson, he said "I don't want the money, he can have my share as well, I just want the title"
Now that's the sort of fighter I'm talking about. In reality they ll be fighting for a purse but they want it that bad they'd fight for nothing. Good one raga.
Quite correct, it was in there blood. Frazier would probably have said stuff the money, just give me ali! And Duran with leonard.
That's another great example of what I'm talking about. That's why in my opinion boxing loses something if it's all about money. Yes they deserve as much as they can get but the true blue boxers, the ones that literally would fight for nothing, there the ones that fight with there heart on there sleeve. Floyd Mayweather is imo ever thing bad about boxing. Cherry picking and not fighting for x amount of dollars, that turns me off from boxing. Give me a bassilo any time other Floyd.
Toney certainly seemed to enjoy his work. What about guys from wealth families like MAB and the Khazakstani who fought Hopkins who's name I can't remember? Probably not exactly what the thread is looking for but they fit the bill in a way since money couldn't have been their primary objective in pursuing a boxing career.
It fits the bill perfectly. Guys that literally live to fight for fighting sake. Like the names mentioned above, Leonard, Floyd Patterson and the sort that it was all about the money. I have more respect for the type u mentioned.
Dont know if he would fight for nothing but an up an coming Dwight Braxton enjoyed his work as much as Frazier.
