Im curious... how did Tyson and Marciano compare in the speed and agility department? What did every victim of Tyson who bothered to comment claim was the key to Mike being so difficult?
Everyone was so hungry for an exciting champion that nobody noticed many of his challengers were literally dug up. Most were not qualified to fight for a title because they went years without beating rated opponents. Holmes, Thomas, Bruno, Spinks, Tubbs check their records. Douglas, Tucker and Smith were his genuine challengers. There is a big difference in those performances. But we never noticed
Yes we did. It was always known that Tyson came along when the heavyweight division was in a pitiful state and the men he faced were mostly discredited or out-of-sorts "re-treads". Trevor Berbick was Tyson's best performance, since Berbick was a WBC champion was coming off a good win, and Tyson obliterated him. But then, Berbick is only Berbick, and was known to be erratic. It's only in recent years that revisionists have tried to boost Tyson's opposition and especially ignore the fact that many of the better "names" there were clearly not at their best or coming in with good form. At the time, Tyson's boosters certainly didn't feel the need to, since he was expected to reign for a long long time. They didn't have to pretend a 238 pound Tony Tubbs or a disappointing 15-0 pro Tyrell Biggs were something they were not.
While I think there are some boxers who might be able to stop and or beat Rocky, I would not pick anyone to stop him as the most likely scenario. Sure if he got cut some skilled type might be able to get a stoppage but that is hard for me to pick even if it is a plausible scenario. Again I would not pick anyone to stop him, but would give Louis Foreman Liston Tyson Lewis a consideration. I feel comfortable to pick a few to beat him on points, but even there that is hard due to the fact that there is no blueprint imo because no one ever did.
A bit of a weird and directed thread idea, but alright! I think: -If any man is gonna stop Marciano, it'd be a prime Joe Louis. Best puncher in history. 50/50 chance honestly. -Dempsey, Liston and Foreman have a chance, all brutal punchers and top 8 h2h heavies, though I wouldnt bet on it -Tyson has a chance of maybe getting a poor early stoppage from a ref. Besides that, I can't see any man stopping Marciano, especially the likes of Holmes, Ali, Klitschkos, Lewis, etc. Even if Ali got a lucky cut on Marciano, I'd be more worried about Ali!
Not positive any of these guys stop him especially the Klitchkos. Maybe Foreman and Tyson have the best shot of scoring a KO. I used to rank Big george above Marciano but after more thought and more vid on each I wouldn’t bet on a Foreman win. There just isn’t enough evidence that he would fall to these men in his prime...maybe he would but I wouldn’t bet on it.
I am sure I am in the minority as Ali never loses a hypothetical h2h on here. But I have always favored Rocky over him in a h2h clash.
Ali always said that Marciano would give him the toughest fight out of any heavyweight champ lol. All of his contemporaries and Joe Louis seemed to think that Marciano would beat him as well. I've heard some make a stylistic argument for Marciano, though Marciano seems to always be the one getting beat stylistically rather than beating someone stylistically. That being said, I rank Marciano, Ali and Louis equally in H2H
I hate to say it, as I love Marciano and I think that pound-for-pound he could dance with anybody, but there are probably any number of behemoths in recent years who would be too big for Rocky. I'm talking about the huge guys of recent vintage who are pretty fast, have good jabs, take no chances, play it safe all the time, and are content to lay back and use their physical attributes to wear down their opponents. I admit I am not up-to-date on all their names, but people conversant in the modern era know who they are.
To be honest I don't see any of these guys stopping Marciano. I think guys like Ingemar Johansson, prime versions of Walcott, Moore, and Louis, Gene Tunney, Sam Langford, and Holyfield would have a better chance at stopping Marciano, since Marciano struggled more with cleverness and speed than he did with size.
